Gilbert, AZ

Gilbert is the 5th largest city in Arizona following Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, and Chandler. According to the latest estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2015, Gilbert’s city population was around 247,542, which is roughly 39,139 higher than the 2010 census. Gilbert is part of the larger Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro area which had an estimated population above 4.5 million in 2015. The metro area is the 12th largest in the Nation and one of the fastest-growing metro areas, increasing by 400,000 people between 2010 and 2015.

Gilbert’s economy mirrors some of the top industries in Phoenix, including healthcare, education, and aerospace, while also adding their own spin with clean and renewable energy, manufacturing and business services.  While Gilbert may not have any Fortune 500 company major headquarter offices, they have several sizable employers: Gilbert Public Schools, Banner Health System (hospital), Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Town of Gilbert, and several large retailers.

History

Gilbert is a relatively young town and prior to the first activity in 1902, was a barren and desolate land. The Arizona Eastern Railway wanted to create a rail line between Phoenix and Mesa that would run through Florence. The rail line was designed in the hopes of bringing gold and copper from a mining area near the Gila River to Phoenix. Frank Murphy began buying rights-of-way from all landowners that the line would cross, including William Gilbert. A spur was constructed to grow hay to ship to Phoenix and shortly after, a depot named Gilbert Depot. Other businesses began to see how successful the area was becoming and set up their own shops beginning in 1908. The town of Gilbert started to take shape one business at a time.

The first Post Office opened in 1912 followed by Gilbert Elementary School. The Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals were built in 1911, which transformed the area into a bustling farming community. People began slowly trickling into Gilbert for farming jobs. Many crops were harvested including the main staple of hay, which would earn Gilbert the title of “Hay Capital of the World.” Mormon colonies fleeing Mexico and Pancho Villa’s forces settled in Gilbert as well, and initiated church groups and meetings in 1915. By 1920 the population had grown to about 500 people and was incorporated in the same year.

More retail shops like Liberty Grocery and Meat Market, Liberty Market Restaurant, as well as Gilbert Bank popped up. The town’s first water tower was built in 1925 and paving projects were commissioned to make shopping more accessible. Progress came to a halt during the Great Depression and Gilbert Bank was converted to a drug store called the Southside Pharmacy. Citizens survived on the little pay they received from farming jobs. In the late 1930s and 1940’s the town picked back up with an increase in crop exports.

In 1970, Gilbert Town Council approved a strip annexation encompassing 53 square miles of county land. The Council observed the surrounding cities of Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler’s growth and paved the way for Gilbert to grow in the same manner.

In the most recent 30 – 40 years of Gilbert’s history, the city has seen exponential growth and was recently named one of the fastest growing towns in the U.S. To put this in perspective, in 1990 Gilbert had 29,000 residents, in 2000 around 100,000 residents, and in 2010 over 208,000 residents!

Education

The Gilbert-Mesa-Chandler area is home to more than 39 colleges, universities, and higher education institutions. The most prominent located within 15 miles of Gilbert city center include Chandler/Gilbert Community College, Everest College Phoenix, Arizona State University, ITT Technical Institute Tempe, and Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Scottsdale.

Culture and Recreational Activities

Art and Museums

The Gilbert Historical Society is a big name in the museum offerings of Gilbert and displays local historical exhibits. The Heard Museum of Anthropology and Primitive Arts is an internationally-known collection of southwestern Indian culture and boasts over 75,000 artifacts. Numerous ancient Indian ruins can also be found and explored around the city and its surrounding area.

The Art Intersection located in downtown Gilbert is home to local artist’s work, educational programs, creative workspaces for local artists, and rotating art exhibits. The Gilbert Visual Arts League and Gilbert Fine Arts Association round out the art district coverage.

Sports

While Gilbert is not home to any professional sports teams, the city does have a diverse makeup of adult leagues such as softball, basketball, and volleyball that citizens are encouraged to join. With over 40 sports fields and parks, there is plenty of room to get active.
