Etymology

Since El Monte is situated between the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Rivers, its residents believed that any type of crop could be grown there. Spanish missionaries and soldiers would often stop in the region for rest between 1770 and 1830, referring to it as El Monte, which in Spanish means “the mountain.”

There are no mountains in the city, but most people assume the name refers to a mountain. Because the word is a translation from that era, El Monte more than likely meant “the woods.” The first explorers came across a beautiful land located between two rivers, encompassed with thick growths of alders, cattails, and wispy willows, hence the name.

History

During the early years, the region was a camping area for pioneers. However, a stage wagon was established in 1849, and the first dwellings and a schoolhouse were erected in 1852.

In 1873, the South Pacific Railroad depot was established nearby. The region thrived from local agriculture, such as walnut fields and extensive fruit orchards. El Monte was incorporated in 1912; it is currently a residential suburb of Los Angeles.
