Fremont, CA

With a population of about 220,000, Fremont is the 96th most populous city in the United States, the 16th most populous city in California and the 2nd most populous city in Alameda County. Fremont was once an unpopular farming area. Thanks to the discovery of gold and mining operations that went on in the area around the middle of the 19th century, it later grew into a large city. Today, the city is home to people from a number of races and many industries of different types. As a city, it spans over an area of 87.6 sq. miles, with 11.6 percent covered by water.

History

The area known as Fremont today became a settlement in 1797 when the 14th California Mission called Mission San Jose was founded by Spaniard Father Fermin de Lasuen. However, the region was originally inhabited by the Ohlone or Costanoan people. At its initial stage, the Mission was more of a quiet, self-sustaining agricultural community. During this period, the settlement was under the control of the missionaries. By 1831, about 1,887 people were living in the Mission. However, the missionaries started to become less influential after a secularization law was enacted by the Mexican government.

But one remarkable historical occurrence that resulted in population increase in the area was the discovery of gold. One of the largest gold discoveries in the world was made in the Sierra Nevada Mountains where Fremont is located. Miners began to mine gold there around 1848. During this time, the Mission was serving as a ‘one stop shop’ for miners coming to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

However, the mining of gold in the area did not last for many years as the quantity of gold found began to reduce. When mining was no longer viable, visitors to Fremont began to use the mining location as a resort. The inhabitants of Fremont during this time returned to agriculture as a means of sustaining themselves. The major crops grown in the area were olives, nursery plants, and grapes. Agriculture became relevant again and was driving the economy of the city for many years.

Fremont was hit in 1868 by The Hayward earthquake of 6.8 magnitude which could be regarded as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the city. The earthquake destroyed not only the Mission San Jose and its outbuildings but also other buildings throughout the Fremont area. Another earthquake that resulted in a very big economic loss to Fremont was The San Francisco earthquake that occurred in 1906. The Palmdale Winery, which was regarded as the largest in California before 1906, was ruined by the earthquake.

The decline in gold mining turned out to become a blessing to Fremont. As gold mining became less viable, there was a decrease in the cost of properties. Consequent upon that, the area witnessed a technological boom as more and more technological industries purchased properties there. With increased high-tech industrial activities, Fremont and its neighborhoods were nicknamed Silicon Valley. Today, the city is home to different kinds of technology industries including automobile, computers and computer-equipment manufacturers.

Fremont became incorporated on January 23 1956. The name “Fremont” was chosen by Wally Pond, who preferred it over Mission Valley. The city was named after John Charles Fremont, who was regarded by historians as a Great Pathfinder, primarily because of his interest and contribution to the development of the area. Five individual townships (Warm Spring, Niles, Irvington, Centerville and Mission San Jose) were joined together to form the city of Fremont.

Economy

There are 29 elementary schools (K-6), five junior high schools, five high schools, one continuation high school and one adult school in the city. The Fremont Unified School District, together with Newark and New Haven Unified School Districts, runs the Mission Valley Regional Occupation Program. The California School of the Deaf is located in Fremont, as well.
