Lancaster, California

Lancaster is a modern, technologically advanced city located in the northern part of Los Angeles County known as Antelope Valley. This vibrant city is surrounded by panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and flat valleys. It is part of the High Desert, with a rich history that adds to its mystique and appeal. With a population of only 160,000 people, Lancaster offers its residents a wonderful sense of intimate community living.

History

Lancaster has a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. Antelope Valley, where the city is located, was home to the Paiute, a Native American tribe. However, the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad spurred on the development of this region’s first settlement, which later became Lancaster. This early community featured section housing, a station house and watering facilities for the locomotives. Construction on the Southern Pacific line was completed by 1876. This railway route passed through Antelope Valley and linked Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The origins of this city’s name are not well known. Some historians attribute it to a railroad station clerk’s surname, while others believe the city’s moniker was assigned by officials of the railway. However, what is known is that the Southern Pacific brought a lot of new settlers into this area. In 1884, one particular settler known as Moses L. Wicks bought this new town from the railroad and began formally developing it. His efforts were fruitful because Lancaster grew into a bustling town by 1890.

Lancaster’s rapid growth in the early days is attributed to its plentiful rainfall. Wheat and barley farmers contributed massively to its overall prosperity. However, the town’s fortune turned sour when the 1894 drought began in the area.

The discovery of borax and gold in 1894 began to shift this trend of poverty and desolation. Construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which concluded in 1913, also played a hand in making Lancaster a booming town again. The town remained unincorporated until 1977 when it was officially designated as a city.

Economy

After the devastating drought that swept through the region in the late 1800s, Lancaster needed to adjust its economic practices to survive. The discovery of borax, which is used in making bleaches and detergents, went a long way in making this city prosperous again. However, it was in the 1930s that Lancaster began experiencing the rapid economic growth that is its landmark even today.

Now, the city’s economy revolves around defense contractors, high technology, manufacturing, real estate, and retail. It all began with the construction of the Muroc Air Force base in the area. Frequent flight tests were conducted at this base, which added to the city’s significance in America as a whole. However, Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier in one of these tests propelled Lancaster into a whole new level of prestige and renown.

Military History

Lancaster is also home to the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, where the Space Shuttle was designed, assembled and even landed a limited number of times. Other notable government and defense installations here are Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. Today, a lot of commercial and military equipment is designed, tested and manufactured in Lancaster. These activities have resulted in the creation of numerous high wage jobs for the people of Lancaster.factoring companies in lancaster

The city also hosts as many as five major industrial and business parks. This has served to attract numerous big businesses to the area, such as the Bank of America, Rite Aide and SYGMA among many others. It is also home to Lancaster State Prison, which was opened in 1993 and remains one of the largest such facilities in Los Angeles.

In the face of the recent global recession, Lancaster made bold moves to keep its residents afloat. City managers entered into a partnership with a Chinese manufacturing firm, BYD, in 2010. BYD is renowned for the production of alternative energy products like vehicles, batteries and solar panels. This partnership resulted in the development of an innovative housing scheme known as “Home of the Future.” This initiative involved incorporating cutting-edge technology from BYD to construct the first efficient, zero-net homes in the U.S. This project’s success has also led to BYD establishing two manufacturing facilities in Lancaster.

Culture

City managers have expended immense planning and effort to revitalize the downtown area of the city, known as Lancaster Old Town Site. Here, historically significant buildings dot the landscape among other more modern amenities like art centers and libraries. Furthermore, the facades of older businesses have also been renovated. This has led to newer companies setting up shops in Old Town, injecting new cash and traffic that has turned this area into a bustling cultural and economic hub.

Lancaster is also very conscious of environmental concerns. It is on track to be the first net-zero urban area in America. This would mean that Lancaster will produce more clean energy than it consumes. And they have already made major strides towards this goal: most of Lancaster’s infrastructure is powered using solar energy. Furthermore, all new homes are now required by law to install solar panels. This is all geared towards reducing Lancaster’s carbon footprint.

Leisure and Recreation

Lancaster today is a major attraction for tourists and local visitors. The city is home to numerous attractions, including historic buildings and impressive installations. The most famous of this has to be the Aerospace Walk of Honor, opened up in 1990 to recognize the first astronauts.

The city is also a hub of lush greenery, with more than 600 acres developed as parks. Its green spaces include beautiful picnic areas, playgrounds, parks, bike trails, and pedestrian paths. The most prominent of these include the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve and Forrest Hull Park.

Alternatively, one could take an artistic journey through classical music, theater and fine arts at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center. Lancaster is also home to the famous annual California Poppy Festival, which draws more than 60,000 visitors. Other great festivals include the Celebrate Downtown Lancaster street fair and the annual Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix.
