Palmdale, California

Situated in the focal area of the northern part of the Los Angeles County in the state California is the dainty city of Palmdale. It is home to around 152,750 people. However, the Palmdale, or Lancaster, urban area has an estimated total population of 513, 547. Overall, the city is known as the 33rd most populous city in California.

History

The first settlement in the city was called Palmenthal. It was said that the village was established on April 20, 1886, by the Lutheran travelers who came from the Midwest. Most of these travelers were identified as of Swiss and German lineage or ancestry.

According to the folk stories of the locals in the area, the travelers were told before that whenever they got a glimpse of the palm trees, it indicated that they were near the ocean. Although they never really caught sight of palm trees, but rather, Joshua trees. They mistakenly thought they were palm trees, and so, that is when they identified their settlement as Palmenthal, which means “palm valley” in German.

You will not find many remnants or marks of the Palmenthal dwelling except for the old cemetery in the Palmdale Pioneer, which is in close proximity to 20th Street East and Avenue S. The city of Palmdale has marked this area as a soon-to-be-established historical park. Another significant piece of evidence of the Palmenthal settlement is the old school house that is now moved and can be found at McAdam Park.

Palmdale Township became a city in August of 1962 when the two square miles of land surrounding the modern day Civic Center were incorporated. In 1964, State Highway 14, also known as the Antelope Valley Freeway, was finished. It was constructed to create a connection between Los Angeles and Palmdale.

For more than two decades, the city has consistently ranked in the top 25 fastest growing cities in the United States, based on the percentage change. It is also the second biggest city in Los Angeles County, in terms of land area, and one of the biggest cities in the United States that is not served by either a U.S. Highway or an Interstate Freeway.
