San Diego History

The very first inhabitants of the area we call San Diego were Natives known as the Kumeyaay people. However, when the Europeans arrived, San Diego was the first part of California they ever settled in, inspiring them to label the city as the “birthplace of California.”

Explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered San Diego Bay in 1542, but it would be 200 years later before the Europeans would establish a fort and mission in 1769. This establishment would eventually expand under Spanish rule until the region was soon taken over by Mexico.

In 1846, the United States was at war against Mexico over Alta California, a region that included major ports in California, including San Diego. As a final result of the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848, Mexico signed the “Treaty of Cahuenga” confirming the surrender of Alta California to the United States in 1847. Mexican negotiators fought tirelessly to keep San Diego as part of Mexico, but the Americans refused, stating that San Diego was “for every commercial purpose of nearly equal importance to us with that of San Francisco.” The Mexican-American border was then established to include the entire San Diego Bay as part of the United States.

In 1850, the state of California was officially admitted to the United States. Though San Diego stayed a small town for decades, it began to rapidly develop thanks to the military development establishments during World War II. The foundation of San Diego’s economy was also laid by boosters, entrepreneurs, and the booming industries of military defense and technology, international trade and tourism.

This explains why San Diego remains a force in military development, technology, and tourism to this day. Today, San Diego has become the eighth largest city in the entire country.
