History

Torrance takes its name from Jared Sidney Torrance, an American real estate developer after it was founded in 1911. They purchased a portion of the Spanish land grant called Rancho San Pedro and hired nationally distinguished landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to develop a new planned community. Architect Irving Gill helped by designing the principal structures of the buildings. The output of their vision and hard work is what we know today as Torrance.
