Aurora, Colorado

Located just outside of Denver, Aurora is the third most populated city in Colorado. This beautiful city has everything for visitors and residents alike. It is home to six award-winning municipal golf courses (as well as a number of private golf courses) and has more than 100 parks and a variety of historical attractions.

History

During the silver boom in Colorado in the late 1800s, Donald Fletcher and his business partners saw a real estate opportunity and purchased four square miles east of Denver. Fletcher was so confident in his investment that he named the town after himself, Fletcher. However, after the silver market crashed in 1893, the town went into a downward spiral. In 1907, Fletcher fled town, leaving behind a large water debt. After Fletcher left, the residents decided to rename the town Aurora in 1907. Aurora was officially incorporated as a city in 1929 with a population of 2,000 people. The opening of Fitzsimmons Army Hospital during World War I was the start of a significant military presence in Aurora that is still there today. Both the Lowry Air Force Base and Buckley Field were established in Aurora during World War II. Although Lowry Air Force Base was closed in the early 2000s, Buckley Field, now known as Buckley Air Force Base, still has a major presence in Aurora.

Military

factoring companies in AuroraTrue to its history, the military and defense industries are very important to the economy of Aurora. Currently, Buckley Air Force Base is the largest employer in the city, employing over 11,000 people. It is also the fastest growing Air Force base in the country. By itself, Buckley Air Force Base supplies approximately $1 billion annually to the economy. A variety of military branches work out of the Buckley Air Force Base, although most are kept under wraps because of national security concerns, and it is the number one missile-tracking center in the United States. Recently, the base has undergone a significant amount of improvements, including a $40 million runway for its F-16 fighter jets and a new dental clinic, signaling that there are no plans to relocate anytime soon.

Aurora is also in the running to become the home to a licensed spaceport. Front Range Airport, located at the northeastern edge of Aurora, has applied to the FAA to become a launch site for Reusable Launch Vehicles and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. If approved, Front Range Airport will provide a strategic location for a spaceport, because of its proximity to a variety of military outposts.

Private Aerospace

Coinciding with its large governmental military presence, Aurora is also home to a significant number of private aerospace and defense companies. In fact, Aurora supplies more than one-third of the direct aerospace jobs in the entire state of Colorado. Some of the leading private aerospace companies with operations in Aurora are Raytheon Company, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and The Boeing Company. Of the four, Raytheon Company has the largest presence, as it is the second largest private employer in Aurora and employs over 2,300 people.

Healthcare/Bioscience

Northern Colorado is a leading region for the healthcare industry. As such, three of the top four private employers and two of the top four public employers in Aurora are in the healthcare or medical field. In the private healthcare industry, Children’s Hospital Colorado is the largest employer, providing over 5,700 jobs to the labor force. Other significant private healthcare companies include HealthONE: The Medical Center of Aurora and Kaiser Permanente. In the public healthcare sector, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is the leading employer, employing over 8,100 people. Across from the Anschutz Medical Campus, at the site of the historic Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Forest City Science is in the middle of development on a $4.3 billion, 184-acre science and technology park called Colorado Science + Technology at Fitzsimons. Although completion of the project is many years away, when finished, the Science + Technology Park the project will directly employ over 44,000 people. Completion of this campus will further solidify Aurora as a hub for bioscience.

Renewable Energy

Aurora is home to the Solar Technology Acceleration Center (SolarTAC), which is the largest test facility for solar-energy technologies in the country. Housed at the Aurora Campus for Renewable Energy, SolarTAC provides a place where their members can come to test and demonstrate their projects to the industry. The goal of SolarTAC is to provide a collaborative environment to help accelerate solar energy technology. Currently encompassing 74-acres, SolarTAC has plans to expand its facility to create more opportunities for education and testing.
