Colorado Springs, Colorado

Known as the Olympic City, Colorado Springs is widely and primarily known for its grand Pikes Peak (Long Mountain) in Arapaho. It is considered as sacred geological monuments by the Arapaho and Ute native tribes that still live within the area. History

The first settlers of Colorado Springs were the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Ute people. In 1854, it was designated as part of the Kansas Territory but the first local settlement was established and formally organized on August 13, 1859, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush.

In 1871, the Colorado Springs Company, owned by General William Palmer, laid out the towns of Fountain Colony and La Font, which were later changed to Colorado Springs within a year. Although Colorado Springs was established as an industrial town, it became a high-class resort community, which earned its moniker the Little London because of the many English tourists that flocked the area. Within two years, a first-class hotel opened in Colorado Springs known as the Antlers Hotel that welcomed both local and international travelers. This placed Colorado Springs on the map.

The regional railroad, already operating in the area, brought in more industries in the following years. Between 1899 and 1901, the Tesla Experimental Station operated in Colorado Springs where aircraft flight testing began. In World War II, the US Army also had a military presence in Colorado Springs where it operated an air field.

Geography and Cityscape

Colorado Springs is situated in a high desert with the Palmer Divide to its north, the southern Rocky Mountains to its west and the high desert lands to the south. The city was first founded at the confluence of the Fountain Creek and Monument Creek which are both connected to the Arkansas River watershed. The city has a total area of 194.6 square miles, where only 0.19 percent (0.35 square miles) is comprised of water.

As a bustling city, Colorado Springs has many features of a modern urban setting. Out of the 194.6 square-mile total area, only 132 have been developed. Its location in the east side of the Rocky Mountains provide a rapid warming effect from the Chinook winds; thus the city does not experience large accumulation of snow. Interestingly, Colorado Springs is also famous for its lightning strikes. It is one of the most active lightning strikes area in the country. This is the reason why inventor Nikola Tesla chose the city as the location for his Tesla Experimental Station to study electricity.

Colorado Springs is very accessible to everyone. There are three airports in and near the city. People can take the plane and disembark at the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, which is located 11 miles east from downtown. Colorado Springs is also accessible by car. It is connected to Interstate 25 that runs from north to south through the city. Drivers can also take the Highway 83 which provides a secondary routed from East Denver to the city.
