History

On November 22, 1858, during the Pikes Peak gold rush, a land speculator named General William Larimer staked a claim on the bluff overlooking the meeting place of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. He named his new settlement Denver, in hopes of gaining favor with Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. Unbeknownst to Larmier though, Governor Denver had already resigned from office by the time he made the claim, yet the name stuck. At the time, Denver was actually one of three gold towns in close proximity to each other that would all eventually become modern-day Denver. One year after its inception in 1859, the names of the other two cities were dropped in exchange for a shared barrel of whiskey amongst the town leaders and the rest is history. Today, it’s known as the Mile High City because the 13th step of the Colorado State Capitol building is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level – one mile exactly.

Geography

While many people picture Denver as being located in the mountains, that’s technically not true. The city of Denver sits on gentle rolling plains, about twelve miles east of the foothills, a series of small mountains that cap at 11,000 feet. Beyond that are the famous Rocky Mountains, whose striking peaks rise a stunning 14,000 feet. Since Denver is so close to these mountains, it ranks as number six nationally in the number of ski areas. Although Brown was best known for surviving the horror of the Titanic, her contributions to the world were much greater than that: she was a leader for women’s suffrage, advocated for raising the minimum wage, led relief efforts during World War I, and eventually earned the French Legion of Honor for her contributions. The Molly Brown Museum takes her Denver residence and uses it to commemorate her achievements as well as inspire the youth of today to aspire to similar heights.
