History

The Grand Valley has been the scene of thrilling historical dramas that have played out here since 200 A.D. And, its geographic placement could not make the valley a more fitting location for this. The Grand Valley is flanked by the picturesque monoliths and canyons of the Colorado National Monument to the west, ancient Little Book Cliffs to the northeast, and the Grand Mesa, which is one of the largest flat-top mountains in the world, on the southeast. The valley was carved out of this rugged terrain by the Colorado River and the Gunnison River.

In 200 A.D., a mysterious aboriginal tribe known as the Fremont settled in the Grand Valley. Archaeologists have not unearthed much about them, but it is clear that the tribe moved from this area by 1300. After this, the nomadic Ute tribe moved here, eventually occupying much of Utah and Colorado.

The Utes were seasonal pastoralists and game hunters. They managed to adapt to the valley’s uniquely challenging environment and terrain. Both of these tribes were forced into Native American reservations by the U.S. Government in 1881. Though this was a dark part of the region’s history, it has led to a rich cultural heritage of indigenous rock paintings and carvings that have survived until today.

Grand Valley was one of the last places occupied by European settlers in America. In fact, it was part of Spain’s colonies until 1821. It was then taken over by Mexico after the new country gained its independence from Spain. However, Grand Valley reverted to its status as a U.S. Territory in 1848 after the end of the Mexican-American War.

However, Spanish explorers planted the seeds of the gold and silver rush in the area as early as the mid-1700s. Despite their limited success, American mountain men flocked to the region in search of gold in the 19th century. They also played a critical role in guiding government expedition and surveying parties through the territory.

The removal of Native American tribes from the Grand Valley opened up the area to town builders, ranchers, and homesteaders. By the time the valley was identified as a good site for the new town of Denver, the area was already occupied by more than 50,000 people. However, Grand Junction was officially incorporated in 1882.

Economy

Since it was first established, the economy of Grand Junction revolved around farming, growing fruits and ranching. The main fruits cultivated here are pears, cherries, plums, peaches, and apricots. Fruit orchards remain an important part of the city’s economic system. More recently, wine grapes have been added to this list. A combination of lots of sun and irrigation using canalized water from Colorado River has turned this region into one of the largest wine countries in America.

Retail also forms an important sector for this city. The major sellers here are gasoline and goods related to fishing and hunting. Furthermore, mining activity has been a significant provider of employment for Grand Junction residents. In fact, Climax Uranium Mill set up shop in the city prior to its decommissioning. Oil and shale have also been found in the area over the decades.

This led to a period of prosperity in the city that lasted until the early 1980s. In fact, Western Colorado has been found to have the biggest concentration of shale and oil in the world. However, historical embargoes and low prices have led to a decline in this sector, with major players pulling out of the region. This resulted in economic decline throughout the state in the 1980s.

Grand Junction has been able to turn its fortunes around. By focusing on more stable industries, the city has been able to build a viable economy that assures its residents’ consistent prosperity. Today, major economic activities here are agriculture, tourism, and healthcare. Spurred on by rising global energy prices, major oil and gas companies have also begun reinvesting in the region too.

Grand Junction has numerous natural and historical attractions that bring tourists to the region in droves. The Colorado National Monument, Little Book Cliffs, and Grand Mesa attract a large audience of people who want to enjoy their picturesque skylines. These formations also host a lot of annual music and arts festivals. The most popular one is The Country Jam Ranch, which has been held since 1992.

This city has also become a major destination for mountain bikers from as far away as Salt Lake City and California. Grand Junction is famous for its beautiful single-track bike trails like the Kokopelli and Tabeguache trails.
