Cape Coral is a city located in Lee County in Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. It was established in 1957 as a pre-planned community, and by 2010, the population had grown to 154,305.

The story of Cape Coral begins in late 1956, when entrepreneurial brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen started consulting to snap up land at Redfish Point on the west bank of the Caloosahatchee River.
The early history of Cape Coral begins with the Calusas, a warring tribe of Native Americans, who vanished when the United States took control of the territory. In 1513, Spanish conquistador Ponce de Leon discovered Florida. In exchange for forgiveness of $5 million in debt, Spain deeded Redfish Point to the United States in 1821.
In 1822, Florida became an organized region, causing an influx of residents to arrive. Conflicts between seminoles and white settlers became frequent in the Cape Coral area. The Harney Point Massacre was part of the Seminole Wars. Seminoles battled against the military and settlers in an attempt to keep their lands. The Seminoles were moved to reservations when they lost the battle.
When Florida became a state in 1845, the land was patented to Florida. The state sold quite a bit of its property to railroad companies, who in turn sold the land to different organizations such as the Matlacha Cattle Company, as well as to individuals. One of these people was Franklin Miles of Miles Laboratories and of Alka Seltzer, who got a portion of the land in 1910. He used it mainly to hunt. Wildlife such as deer, turkey and ducks were usually hunted on horseback.
Around then, Cape Coral was known as the “Hungryland” or “other side of the river.” It was populated by fishermen, rustlers, cattlemen, loggers and homesteaders. It was a hard place to live because it was desolate and wild.
This is the land that the Rosen brothers purchased for $678,000 from Granville Keller, Ogden Phipps and Franklin Miles. When their company, Gulf Guaranty Land and Title Company, later known as Gulf American Land Corporation, made this purchase, history of the area was forever changed.
The Rosen’s business office, which is the first building of the area, was built on what is presently Coronado Parkway and Cape Coral, where George’s Auto now stands.
