The city of Coral Springs is a significant part of Broward County within the state of Florida. Not only does it have a large population of over 130,000 people, it is also in the principal city of Miami’s metropolitan area. This is an impressive achievement, considering that Coral Springs started out as a master-planned development that was established by a real estate company known as Coral Ridge Properties (now called WCI Communities).

The area that is now Coral Springs started out as a 20,000-acre spread of marsh lands purchased by Henry Lyons in the period between 1911 and 1939. Several floods rocked the region in 1947, prompting Florida to establish the Southern Florida Flood Control District. The authority built canals and levees, which drained most of the marshy areas. This region is now known as the South Florida Water Management District. The area was then cleared and used to farm beans and – after Lyons’ death in 1952 – cattle.
The end of the Second World War brought a population and real estate boom to South Florida. This, in turn, attracted a large number of investors, one of which was Coral Ridge Properties. The company had already put up numerous developments in Broward County and proceeded to buy over 3,800 acres of land from the Lyons’ holdings in 1961.
The city of Coral Springs was officially incorporated in 1963. The developers then created a master plan for the new city in 1964, catering to an estimated population of 50,000 people. They also built the landmark covered bridge in the same year, all in an effort to promote the new city. In 1965, Coral Ridge Properties acquired an additional 6,000 acres from the Lyons family. This move increased the city’s total acreage to 16 square miles.
As a result of proper planning and a pleasant aesthetic value, the city experienced massive population growth during the latter years of the 20th century. This led to the development of an extensive infrastructure system. Services like schools, retail outlets, parks, museums and theaters were also developed during this time.
Coral Springs has evolved from its agricultural heritage to more service-based sectors. The main economic activities here today include manufacturing, finance, retail and wholesale trade, hospitality, health services, construction and transportation. Furthermore, small segments of the population still practice farming and fishing.
It is home to large corporations like Alliance Entertainment, First Data, Royal Plastics Group and an office of ABB Group, among many others. The city is also home to massive shopping malls, the most notable of which is Coral Square. All in all, Coral Springs has a vibrant economy that has led to low unemployment and crime rates, as well as a high level of prosperity for its people.
As a result, Coral Springs is consistently ranked among the best places to live in America. It has also been named as Morgan Quinto’s “10th Safest City in the U.S., America’s Promise “100 Best Cities for Young People” and received the Malcolm Baldrige “National Quality Award.”
Coral Springs owns and manages an extensive network of urban parks, green spaces and recreational areas. This includes more than 50 municipal green parks, water parks and skate parks comprising more than 675 acres. The largest park here is Mullins Park, which consists of just over 70 acres of land.
There are also four conservation areas here, the largest of which is the 38-acre Sandy Ridge Sanctuary. It also has a Sportsplex that contains ice rinks, tennis courts, a jogging path, dog park and an aquatic center.
Coral Springs has an active arts scene, with most of this activity revolving around the Coral Springs Center for the Arts and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. The city is also home to The Covered Bridge – which is an iconic landmark – and two Florida Heritage Sites. These include the aforementioned bridge, as well as the Museum of Coral Springs History.
Furthermore, the city hosts a number of popular annual events and festivals. The oldest and most well known of these is the “Our Town” Festival, which has been celebrated every year since 1979.
