Located in Polk County, Florida, the city of Lakeland is home to over 100,000 residents. As part of the Lakeland-Winter Haven Metropolitan Area (a metro area with over 600,000 people), Lakeland is paired with Richmond Hill, Japan; Portmore, Jamaica; Balti, Moldova; and Chongming County, Shanghai, China in the Sister Cities program. Lakeland was once home to Native American tribes and now boasts the 1,267-acre Circle B Bar Reserve.

With a total area of 67 square miles, Lakeland sits within the Central Florida Highlands area. Its terrain consists mainly of flatland and gently rolling hills. Summers here tend to be hot and humid with high temperatures in the 90s and lots of sunshine, while winters are mild and dry with high temperatures typically in the low 70s and lows dipping only into the 50s. Below-freezing temperatures are rare.

Unsurprisingly, given the city’s name, lakes are the dominant feature in Lakeland. There are 38 named lakes in the area with numerous unnamed bodies of water. Lake Parker is the largest with an impressive size of 2,550 acres. Lakeland culture revolves around the many lakes. In fact, residents use the lakes as reference points (as in, “I live near Lake Morton.”). There are many swans on the lakes; these are the descendants of royal swans gifted to the city by Queen Elizabeth. In 2006, Scott Lake experienced a cluster of sinkholes and was almost completely drained, but it has since partially refilled.

History

After the Civil War, Bartow (southeast of Lakeland) was established as the county seat of Polk County. However, people soon began settling in the northern area of the county, which became Lakeland. Lakeland was incorporated in 1885, not long after rail lines reached the area. Abraham Munn founded the town when he purchased 80 acres of land in what is now downtown Lakeland. The Spanish-American war had a major impact on Lakeland, as the city was a launch point for the war; with over 9,000 troops housed here. This was a significant point in the city’s development.

Florida’s boom led to the construction of many important structures in Lakeland, many of which are listed today on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of these places are the Terrace Hotel, Polk Theatre, Park Trammell Building, and the Frances Langford Promenade. There are several historic districts in Lakeland with many buildings built during the 1920s and 1940s. From 1923 to 1927, the Cleveland Indians held their spring training there at Henley Field Ball Park. Several parks were built around Lake Mirror, including Hollis Gardens and Barnett Children’s Park.

Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the boom to come to an end, and it took years for the city to recover. The 1934 arrival of the Detroit Tigers for spring training helped Lakeland’s re-emergence begin. Another helpful factor was the development of the Lakeland Municipal Airport. The 1930s also brought in renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who designed the Florida Southern College campus (his design became a pattern that many other Florida colleges followed).

Economy

Major industries in Lakeland include cattle, citrus, and phosphate mining. Tourism, insurance, medicine, transportation, and music have all increased in importance over the past few decades. Publix Supermarkets is the largest employer in the city with over 6,500 employees including warehouse and headquarter employees.

Lakeland is also a transportation hub. FedEx and the Saddle Creek Corporation provide over 600 jobs in the city. Other major employers in Lakeland include GEICO, Rooms to Go, Lakeland Regional Medical Center, and Amazon.

Besides being a popular travel destination, Florida also offers many business and job opportunities. Lakeland leads the state in job growth with a recent substantial boom in job opportunities. This is partly due to new home construction and numerous economic developments. These factors have resulted in a population spike, helping Lakeland become Florida’s seventh-fastest growing city.

Art and Culture

There are many artistic and cultural experiences to enjoy in Lakeland for residents and visitors alike, including numerous performing and visual arts options. The Lakeland Center is a multi-purpose entertainment complex featuring diverse performing arts programs such as the Imperial Symphony Orchestra, the Lakeland Broadway and Entertainment Concert Series, and a variety of children’s performances, to name a few. Florida Dance Theatre is an education, outreach, and entertainment center dedicated to bringing the art of dance to Lakeland and the surrounding communities. The Imperial Symphony Orchestra offers concerts as well as diverse social events each season such as “Masterworks” concerts with world-class guest artists, outdoor summer “Pops” concerts, and even a springtime “Concert under the Stars” at Bok Sanctuary.

Lakeland is also home to several museums, including Explorations V, a three-story kids’ museum featuring interactive exhibits and programs celebrating the five senses. The Polk Museum of Art offers more than 20 annual exhibits in a wide range of genres and styles, from the ancient to the contemporary and from realistic to abstract. Florida Southern College houses the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. And don’t miss the Florida Air Museum at SUN ‘n FUN, Florida’s official aviation museum and education center. This museum boasts a unique collection of over 35 antique airplanes.

Little Gator Creek Reserve is a similar concept and home to deer, turkeys, tortoises, and more; visitors can hike and picnic here as well.
