Augusta, Georgia

With a population of 580,270, Augusta has the second largest metro population and the third largest city population in the state of Georgia. The History of Augusta

Augusta began in 1736 as a settlement established by General James Edward Oglethorpe on the Savannah River’s western bank. However, before the establishment of this second town of the 13th British colony, different indigenous tribes, including the Creek and Cherokee Indian tribes, were living along the river. They crossed the Savannah River through the area called Augusta due to the fact that it was located on the fall line. The settlement was named Augusta to honor the bride of the Prince of Wales, Frederick Louis.

At this early stage, the settlement served as a trading post. Its population increased as traders from South Carolina established their businesses in Augusta. Three years after the establishment of the settlement, Noble Jones, its official surveyor, set out for the city following the completion of a fort. Traders that moved into the settlement helped in its development. Most of them moved with their entire families. Infrastructure and buildings were gradually erected, starting with the construction of a church building to meet their needs.

Augusta served as a place of refuge for inhabitants of the surrounding countryside. As information spread about the availability of lands in the area, groups of settlers from Virginia and the Carolinas moved into the city and acquired lands in the neighboring countryside. These new settlers were mainly tobacco farmers. They introduced tobacco farming in Georgia. Tobacco farming soon became the mainstay of the region’s agriculture.

Augusta was the major site for two important battles during the American Revolution, namely: the Siege of the White House, during which the settlement was captured, and the Siege of Augusta, during which the town was recaptured by the Patriot forces. A number of historic buildings, such as St. Paul Church, were destroyed during and after the war. However, important structures like Fort Cornwallis were then constructed.

The Revolutionary War resulted in the expansion of the initial town of Augusta. Streets were created and named after fallen Revolutionary War Generals. At the end of the war, Augusta was made the capital of Georgia in 1786, a position it held till 1795. As the capital city, it was home to top government officials. With the presence of these top of government officials, large buildings, some of which were homes for the officials, sprang up. Infrastructural development was also given a boost during this period. For example, in 1802, the Old Academy of Richmond County was constructed by the Trustees of the Academy. Other important historical buildings that were constructed are the Springfield Baptist Church, the Ezekiel Harris House, the home of George Walton and others.

The removal of the state capital from the city did not slow down its development. But it was not all that rosy for the city. For example, it witnessed a considerable economic decline during the nineteenth century, when many of its well-established planters moved to Alabama and Mississippi; however, there are factors that helped the city to overcome this economic recession to become one of the most prosperous cities in the state. It has become a popular military, manufacturing and medicine hub. It consolidated with Richmond County in 1996 to form Augusta-Richmond County.
