Columbus, GA

Columbus has the second largest population in Georgia. It’s named after the great Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus, and is in the center of the administration of Muscogee County. The city is among the three Fall Line Cities of Georgia. It stretches over a total area of 220.8 square miles. Its 2014 was estimated at 200,887, ranking it in 111th place among U.S. cities.

History of Columbus

The area called Columbus today was initially the homeland of the Creek Indians. Unlike many cities in the United States, Columbus was already planned before it was established. The Georgia Legislature acted in 1828 to establish Columbus as a trading post to make Georgia’s western border stronger. Dr Edwin L. DeGraffenried planned the city on the bank of Chattahoochee River- its connection to the world. It was through this river that its agricultural produce, especially cotton, was shipped through New Orleans to the international cotton market.

Columbus became commercially prominent with the construction of railroad in the 1850s. Rooted primarily in the agriculture industry, the area later became an industrial center in the South, starting with the construction of textile mills. It was named Lowell of the South because textile production levels rivaled with those of Lowell, Massachusetts.

Columbus played a remarkable role in the Civil War. The city increased its local production, becoming the second largest supplier to the Confederate Army after Richmond. It had a shipyard, sword factory and blacksmith that handled the production of certain military supplies.

However, many of its industrial buildings were destroyed during the Battle of Columbus, Georgia. But after the war, the city was rebuilt, and many of its industries were also revived. New structures such as Springer Opera House were constructed. Thus, its infrastructure, and population, began to grow.

The navigable point on the Chattahoochee River from the Gulf of Mexico is in Columbus, making the city a shipping and military manufacturing hub for the region. As a means of obtaining more services from the government, in 1971 Columbus consolidated with Muscogee County following the 1970 vote. Bibby City, which initially chose to be a semi-independent city, also voted to be incorporated into Columbus in 2001. Today, Muscogee County has the largest area in the state of Georgia. Nowadays, Columbus is home to Columbus State University, many companies, large residential areas and lots of attractions and places of interest.
