Bloomington & Normal

Bloomington and Normal are twin cities much like Minneapolis-St. Paul except that they are located in Illinois, America’s heartland. Combined, the two cities have a population of approximately 145,000 people and are the fifth most populated city in the state. There is a wide array of things to do in and around the cities. History

Between the two, the city of Bloomington was the first to be created. It was created when a small town was officially declared a county seat in 1830. The land for the city was originally donated by James Allin, one of the promoters for the newly formed county. Once a design for the city had been decided, the plots were then sold off to the highest bidder at an auction on July 4th the next year. The area because extremely popular thanks to the rich soil of the surrounding land, attracting farmers from all around the state. The city center was known as Downtown Bloomington and became an urban hub that attracted all sorts of people, including a lawyer from nearby Springfield, Abraham Lincoln. Normal, Illinois got its start under the name North Bloomington in 1854 by a gentleman named Joseph Parkinson. The town was eventually renamed Normal in 1865 after the nearby Illinois State Normal University. A “normal university” at the time was the name of a school that taught high school graduates to become teachers. The school eventually transitioned into a regular four-year college called Illinois State University, but by that time the name of the town had long since stuck.

Today, Illinois State University is one of the top employers in the state and significantly contributes to the local economy. The other major employers in the area include Country Financial, Advocate Bromenn Medical Center, Afni and the local school district, but the largest by far is State Farm Insurance. In fact, State Farm Insurance employs more people than the next 11 companies combined. There are many different industries that contribute to the economy of the cities. The largest by far are production, transportation and material moving which make up nearly 25 percent of the entire workforce, double the national average. Other major industries include sales, office and administrative support, construction and maintenance, management, business and finance, and education.

Attractions

Those looking to visit Bloomington-Normal will be happy to find an activity for no matter what kind of mood strikes. One of the largest buildings in the U.S. Cellular Coliseum and is a fantastic destination for sports fans. Here, guests can find a few different thrilling sports teams to watch. The first is the Bloomington Edge, a member of the Indoor Football League. During hockey season, the filed is rolled back to reveal the hockey rink where the Bloomington Thunder of the United States Hockey League play. The coliseum also plays host to a wide variety of plays, trade shows and motorsport events throughout the year as well. If visitors are looking to do a bit of skating themselves, they can always head down to the Pepsi Ice Center, a public skate center that boasts a full 200′ x 85′ sheet of ice. The staff at the ice center offer skating lessons, youth and adult hockey programs and even recreational curling leagues.

Golf

Another great way for visitors to get out and get some exercise is by exploring one of Bloomington-Normal’s many golf courses. In all, there are four courses within driving distance of the city and each offers its own unique challenges and breathtaking views. The most popular and prestigious of these is The Den at Fox Creek. This par 72 course is currently rated four stars and was designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer. The course itself opened in 1997 and features amenities like club rental, restaurant, pro shop and GPS-equipped golf carts. In addition to the course itself, there are also practice faculties golfers can use like a driving range, putting green and an area specifically to practice chip shots.

Constitution Trail

To get the nature walk without the need to swing a club, those visiting the area can travel the Constitution Trail. This is a 24-mile trail that can be walked, ran, biked or rollerbladed that operates on a dedicated lane throughout most of the city. The trail is even sectioned off with bridges and tunnels when it goes through the busiest sections of town. Best of all, in the wintertime when Illinois is typically covered in snow the city makes no effort to clear the trail and instead it is opened up to the cross country skiing community.

Miller Park Zoo

For a different kind of walk through nature, travelers should absolutely visit the Miller Park Zoo. The park opened all the way back in 1891, with the interesting side note that there is no record of what animals were originally kept at the zoo. All historians know for sure is that there was at least one deer. The zoo began in earnest when a traveling circus lion got lost and endued up on a local farmer’s property. The lion was named Big Jim and became the first attraction of the zoo with an expansion coming immediately following his death, funded by an outpouring of locals who had loved the lion. Today, the Miller Park Zoo has been home to foxes, bats, spider monkeys, porcupines, raccoons, alligators, gray wolves, bison, elephants, penguins, black bears, mountain lion, moose, polar bears, lions and chimps. The Miller Park Zoo also spearheaded the Junior Zookeeper program, which allows students entering the fifth grade additional chances in the classroom to learn about the animal and eventually volunteer at the zoo.

Performing Arts

For a quieter evening, there are several performing arts centers in Bloomington. Most recently, the city has refurbished an old theater built in 1921 and turned it into the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts. This building has become the centerpiece for the city’s newly minted Cultural District which includes several other noteworthy locations like a festival park, a center for arts education and the McClean County of Arts Theater. The Bloomington Center plays host to over 400 events each and every year and has produced shows of nationally touring musical acts as well as plays and musical. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Castle Theater a relatively small 1,000 seat theater that first opened in 1916. This is one of the theaters originally built by legendary designers Balaban and Katz, who were the inventors of the contemporary movie palace. The Castle has recently undergone a $1.5 million renovation and has been restored to its former self.

Twin Cities

Bloomington and Normal aren’t usually the first cities on a traveler’s wish list, and they aren’t necessarily views as economic powerhouses either. However, it would be wrong to simply write off these Twin Cities as there is much more to them than most people initially realize. These are cities with strong economic foundations and plenty to do for the wandering tourist. Visitors can take in historic sights and natural beauty, attend a play or concert or even visit a top notch zoo. Bloomington and Normal stand as two hidden gems that have too long been hidden in the shadow of the more-famous Chicago.
