Overland Park, Kansas

Stretching over an area of 75 square miles, Overland Park is home to around 186,515 people according to the 2015 population estimate. The city is located in Johnson County and in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Though it was incorporated after World War II, it has excelled in many areas, receiving a number of national awards for overcoming the competition in economic health, industry health, tax rates, safety, education and quality of life.

History

Overland Park was founded by William B. Strang Jr., who arrived in the area in 1905. He purchased 600 acres along a military road and chartered Overland Park and other subdivisions. He plotted Overland Park to be a park-like community that would feature recreational facilities, commercial and shopping areas, educational institutions and inviting neighborhoods. This explains why the city developed into one of the most lively, comfortable and safest areas in Kansas.

Strang oversaw the initial development of the area, completing a number of residential developments. He also built an airfield where the first airplane flight in the entire Mississippi River Valley took place. Among his achievements was the construction of an interurban railroad, remnants of which are preserved to this day. The city’s historical heritage includes Strang’s Carriage House, 79th and Santa Fe Drive and Strang’s limestone car barn.

After his death in 1921, the city continued to progress. It was incorporated as a first class city in May of 1960. At the time, it had a population of about 28,000. But the population has grown significantly. As of the 2010 census, its population was just over 173,000. Apart from an increase in population, Overland Park has also seen significant improvement in economic and infrastructural development. There is always something new in every decade. Oak Park Mall, Metcalf South Shopping Center, Corporate Woods, the Children’s Farmstead and others were erected during the 1960s and 1970s. The 1980s could be described as the era of commercial and residential development boom in the city as a result of increase in population.

The historic downtown area of the city was given a facelift during the early 1990s. Several points of interest, such as the Farmer’s Market Pavilion, were added during this decade. At the beginning twenty first century, the city’s economy continued to boom as more businesses were established in the area, which prompted the city to add more 15 square miles in its southern end, following a city council vote.
