Louisiana

Located in the southeastern part of the United States, Louisiana is home to more than 4.6 million residents. New Orleans is the largest city in the state with close to 370,000 people.

The state capital, Baton Rouge, is its second largest city with about 230,000 people. The city has the tallest capitol building in the United States. The 34 floors make it reach 450 feet tall.

The Mississippi River flows through the state and ends at the southern part where Louisiana borders the Gulf of Mexico. The coastline is constantly changing and goes inland up to 25 miles in some spots, thus the nickname “The Bayou State.”

Slightly north of the coastline, the land rises gradually with a few hills to the east and west. From the center of the state to the north, the land continues to elevate. Driskill Mountain is the state’s highest point at 535 above sea level.

Louisiana has a subtropical climate with hot, long summers and short, mild winters. It frequently rains throughout the year keeping the forest land green. Forests occupy 51 percent of the total state.

Industries

Oil, coal, and natural gas have always been important to the Louisiana economy. Oil was first discovered in the state in 1901. Today, the state ranks third out of the 50 states in petroleum production and second in natural gas production. Louisiana has 19 oil refineries, which is the second largest number in the United States next to Texas. The state was also the first site of drilling over water in the world.

Agriculture is also another important industry. The top agricultural products in the state include sugar cane, rice, cattle, soybeans, and cotton.

With the longest coastline of any state and various attractions, it’s no wonder tourism is a big part of the state’s economy. According to the state’s website, in 2015, almost 29 million people visited the state, spending about $11.5 billion.

Since tourism is a big part of the economy, there are plenty of attractions and celebrations in the state.

The French Quarter is an old area of New Orleans. Some of the buildings date back as far as 300 years. There are numerous things to do including dining, shopping, and several entertainment venues, many of which are associated with jazz music.

Mardi Gras can be traced back to medieval Europe and came to American in the early 1700s. Today, Mardi Gras is celebrated with music and parades. Most associate Mardi Gras with New Orleans, but Baton Rouge also has a big celebration for the event.

The Honey Island Swamp Tour in Slidell is a guided boat tour where visitors can see nature and wildlife like alligators, snakes, turtles, birds, and more.

The USS Kidd and Veterans Memorial is located in Baton Rouge and is a tourist destination that exhibits the ship, which was active during World War II.

Vermilionville Historic Village allows visitors to step back in time with exhibits, demonstrations, and activities related to history. The attraction also hosts several different events including music, tours, classes, and more.

People

Numerous historical and present-day names are from the “Pelican State.”

Louis Armstrong: (1901-1971) A famous singer and trumpet player, known to be one of the best jazz musicians ever. His native city of New Orleans is full of jazz-inspired attractions today.

John James Audobon: (1785-1851) Although he wasn’t born in Louisiana, his famous paintings for the “Birds of America” were done in the state.

Geoffrey Beene: (1927-2004) A fashion designer born in the small town of Haynesville. His designs dressed some well-known women including Glenn Close, Faye Dunaway, Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, and Nancy Regan.

Truman Capote: (1924-1984) Born in New Orleans, he’s most known for his novels “Other Voices, Other Rooms,” “In Cold Blood,” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

Ellen DeGeneres: (1958-Present) This comedian, actress, and television host was born in Metairie. She has won numerous awards including Daytime Emmy Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and has been nominated for several others.

John A. Lejeune: (1867–1942) Born in Pointe Coupee Parish, he spent more than 40 years in the United States Marine Corps. In 2000, a statue of Lejeune was put in the Pointe Coupee Parish Courthouse to recognize his military achievements.

Eli Manning: (1981-Present) Born in New Orleans, Manning is an NFL quarterback for the New York Giants. He is the younger brother of former NFL player, Peyton Manning.

Peyton Manning: (1976-Present) This NFL football legend was born in New Orleans. Most of his career he played with the Indianapolis Colts, but his last four years he spent with the Denver Broncos, winning the 2016 Super Bowl title.
