Shreveport, LA

Shreveport is a city in Caddo and Bossier parishes. With a population of 199,311 (as of 2010), it is the 113th largest city in the country and the third largest city in Louisiana. The city has two airports, media houses, recreation and sport facilities, attractions of different kinds, offerings of any modern city and overlooks the Red River. Greater Shreveport is comprised of a diverse set of neighborhoods.

History

The Shreveport area was initially occupied by the Caddo Indian tribe, who were largely decimated by series of epidemics that occurred when the European missionaries first arrived. Modern Shreveport was established in part by Henry Miller Shreve, the city’s namesake. He was a steamboat captain that famously cleared the Great Raft of Red River in 1833, so that boats could sail from Loggy Bayou to Hurricane. The clearing of the area resulted in increased commercial activities.

On May 27, 1836, the Shreve Town Company was established. These investors thought that with the establishment of a real estate brokerage firm, they would tap in the advantages of the growing commercial opportunities afforded by the proximity to the river. Shreve Town Company was tasked with establishing a community at the intersection of the Red River and the Texas Trail. They called it Shreveport. The community was later incorporated as a town and a city in 1871 and 1939, respectively.

The community became a hub for cotton and steamboats, thanks to its strategic location on the Red River. The increase in commercial activities resulted in population growth. With industrialization, Shreveport adapted to railroad transportation in the late 19th century, as riverboats were no longer the major means of transportation.
