Whoever makes a visit to western Massachusetts can find their way to one of the coolest little art towns in America: Greenfield. The appeal and the charm of Greenfield are ever-increasing due to the wave of community development and renovations.

History

The first people who inhabited and settled the Greenfield area were the Pocumtuck Indians that left one of the most important Native American artifacts in the history of America. The artifacts found in Greenfield area date between 7000 to 9000 years BCE, and prove that the Pocumtuck Indians were farmers who fished local rivers and planted field crops. They were abolished in 1664 by the Mohawks.

Then, in 1686, the unoccupied area that was previously used as a travel route for Native Americans moving west to modern-day New York was colonized by the English as part of Deerfield. In 1753 the city was incorporated as an independent city and named for the great Green River.

During the French and Indian war, this town saw some of the Indian’s warfare horrors. The so-called “fall fight” took place near the town’s eastern board.

The South Hadley Canal on the Connecticut River opened in 1795, which enabled trading boats to reach Greenfield by bypassing South Hadley Falls, and made this town a prosperous trading center. The first of the few railways to enter the city was the Connecticut River Railroad, which replaced the former canal trade that was until that time the only trading route to Greenfield. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Greenfield was the home of Greenfield Tap & Die Company (GTD).

Eunice Williams Covered Bridge

The Eunice Williams Covered Bridge is well maintained and serves as a standing piece of Greenfield history. Although it was destroyed by hurricane Irene, it was restored and now serves as a great spot for scenic pictures.

One tip: this bridge is a single vehicle bridge, so be cautious. There are people who are not mindful about stopping at the sign on the other end of the bridge.

Poet’s Seat Tower

This was built in 1912 as an honor to a long tradition of artists and poets that are drawn to this place. The local poet Frederick Goddard Tuckerman was mostly an inspiration for the name of the tower, as he spent a lot of time at its location. On November 10th, 1850, Tuckerman called it “Poet’s Seat” in a surviving herbarium entry. Before the sandstone tower, there was a wooden tower that had been built in 1879.

Old Greenfield Village

This place is a most extraordinary replica of a New England town as it was in 1895. If you close your eyes, you can almost hear the sound of the horses’ hooves as they pull the old wooden milk wagon, blacksmiths hammering the nails and the voices of children laughing and counting pennies in front of the old curved candy counter.

It was Wayne Morse who began gathering all the exposed fixtures over 35 years ago, and he had no clue that his passion would lead to building a really exquisite museum of Americana.

From museum exhibits and folk art to delightful displays, this place is a true blend of both a collection of rivals and labor of love. You’ll get the feeling that you’re walking through the past and have an experience of a lifetime doing so.
