Burnsville, Minnesota

Located on the Minnesota River, about 15 miles south of downtown Minneapolis, Burnsville has a population of approximately 60,000 people. Once a quiet farming village, Burnsville saw a drastic increase in the population during the housing boom after World War II and following the completion of the I-35W freeway in the 1960s.

History

Burnsville wasn’t officially incorporated as a city until 1964, but it was actually settled more than a century before that. Some of the first inhabitants to call this area home were a Dakota Tribe known as the Mdewakanton. The Mdewakanton chief, Chief Black Dog, established a permanent settlement in the area in the mid-1700s between the Minnesota River and a lake, which was later named Black Dog Lake after the chief. When the first European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, there were more than 250 Dakota living in the Mdewakanton village. Mostly of Irish, Scottish, and Norwegian descent, the European settlers subsisted on farming and created a small farming village called Burnsville in 1858. Although the origin of the village name is debated, the common belief is that it was named after William Burns, an early settler who donated the land for the school, church, and cemetery to be built. The village remained quiet until the introduction of the railroad made it much more accessible to people from the city. Once discovered, Burnsville became a resort town, with city dwellers building cottages on the shores of its many lakes. The Bloomington Ferry and the Bloomington Ferry Bridge (now known as the I-35 Minnesota River Bridge) in the late 1800s made Burnsville even more accessible and led to an increase in its permanent population.

Economy

Although education and healthcare are the two largest employers in Burnsville, the city’s location at the intersection of two major interstate highways, I-35E and I-35W, and two international airports also make it a strategic location for the manufacturing industry, as it allows easy access for transporting goods around the country. In fact, manufacturing is the second largest industry in Burnsville. Arts and Culture

Formerly known as the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, the Ames Center is the cultural centerpiece of the community. Located in the Heart of the City, overlooking Nicollet Commons Park, the Ames Center has two theaters; one is a large 1,014-seat proscenium stage theater and the other is a smaller 150-seat Black Box Theater. The theaters at the Ames Center feature a variety of events, including concerts, comedy shows, and ballets – just to name a few. The center also houses a 2,000 square-foot art gallery, which holds exhibits eight times a year and features local up-and-coming and professional artists. One of the most popular places in Burnsville for youth and teens is Twin Cities Catalyst Music, formerly known as THE GARAGE. Twin Cities Catalyst Music is a non-profit organization that offers music-related classes and music-related programming. In the past, Twin Cities Catalyst Music has featured concerts from a variety of local, national, and international musical acts.

Another popular Burnsville attraction is Buck Hill. Buck Hill is a ski resort located in southern Burnsville, just west of Crystal Lake. Home to a nationally-acclaimed ski racing team, Buck Hill features 15 different runs and 13 lifts to accommodate a wide range of ski and snowboarding abilities. Additionally, the resort offers ski and snowboarding school and snow tubing. With an advanced snowmaking machine, visitors to Buck Hill can ski or snowboard even in winters with little snowfall.
