History

Minneapolis was originally built around the tallest waterfall on the Mississippi River, Saint Anthony Falls. The surrounding forest provided invaluable for a burgeoning lumber industry, with 17 sawmills and 23 other businesses by 1871. These included iron works and mills for paper, cotton and flour. The efficiency of using water to power these various plants was so amazing that at the time Minneapolis was called “the greatest direct-drive waterpower center the world has ever seen.” Around this same time, the hard red spring wheat that grows almost exclusively around Minnesota became incredibly valuable, and the patent flour that was produced from it became known as the best in the entire world. This led to Minneapolis creating 14 percent of the nation’s grain and the city exporting four million barrels a year to the United Kingdom. The city capitalized on its status as an economic powerhouse and world player and that reputation has carried over into modern day, where Minneapolis is recognized as a World City due being such a significant player in the global economic and cultural landscape.

Today, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area is the second largest economic hub of the Midwest, with only Chicago ahead of it. Sports

Minneapolis is also a major sports hub. It is one of the only cities with five professional sports teams: A professional football, baseball, hockey and men and women’s basketball squad. The NFL team is the oldest, the Minnesota Vikings play downtown in a brand new stadium and have a deep history with the community within the city. Being so far north, hockey is a huge part of the culture there and the Minnesota Wild is the professional hockey team. The Stars used to be located here and Minneapolis was sadly hockeyless for seven years until 2000 when the Wild moved in. They are now as much a part of the city as the former team ever was. The Minnesota Twins are the baseball franchise and they play in Target Field, which was named “The #1 Baseball Stadium Experience in North America” by ESPN, citing the amazing views, great food and comfortable seating. Finally, Minneapolis has not one but two major league basketball teams. The men’s team, the Timberwolves, arrived in 1989 after the Minneapolis Lakers departed for Los Angeles in 1960. The women’s team, the Lynx, are recent WNBA champions and have the seventh best winning percentage in the history of the league.

Lakes

Finally, Minnesota is known as the “land of a thousand lakes” and for good reason. Just outside the city of Minneapolis are several beautiful natural locales to visit. Within the city limits alone are 12 lakes, three rivers and five wetland areas alone. Most of these are ideal for fishing, canoeing, hiking or swimming in the summertime and have been immaculately cared for and maintained. The Chain of Lakes, as they are known, are connected by running, bike and hiking trails as well as a scenic parkway for vehicles.
