Minneapolis

Factoring Companies in MinneapolisMinneapolis is one of the famous Twin Cities of the north, being virtually inseparable with its sister city, St. Paul. Between the two, they account for the 16th largest metropolitan area in the U.S., with about 3.5 million residents. The area has grown because not only is it an economic hub, as it is the second largest financial center of the Midwest, but it is also a famed center for tourism and culture. Visitors come from all over the country to experience Minneapolis’ natural beauty and wonder, and then to also take in the city life and culture of the urban center. No matter what brings people to this northern gem, there is a multitude of experiences to enjoy.

History

Minneapolis was originally built around the tallest waterfall on the Mississippi River, Saint Anthony Falls. This thundering waterfall acted as a vital source of power for the early industries that would become the backbone of Minneapolis and ultimately put it on the map. The surrounding forest provided invaluable for a burgeoning lumber industry, with 17 sawmills and 23 other businesses by 1871. These included iron works and mills for paper, cotton and flour. The efficiency of using water to power these various plants was so amazing that at the time Minneapolis was called “the greatest direct-drive waterpower center the world has ever seen.” Around this same time, the hard red spring wheat that grows almost exclusively around Minnesota became incredibly valuable, and the patent flour that was produced from it became known as the best in the entire world. This led to Minneapolis creating 14 percent of the nation’s grain and the city exporting four million barrels a year to the United Kingdom. The city capitalized on its status as an economic powerhouse and world player and that reputation has carried over into modern day, where Minneapolis is recognized as a World City due being such a significant player in the global economic and cultural landscape.

Economy

Today, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area is the second largest economic hub of the Midwest, with only Chicago ahead of it. The major players in the modern economic landscape are finance, commerce, trucking and rail service and health care. However, the older cornerstone industries of milling and industry haven’t gone away and still play a significant role. Minneapolis has the fifth largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the United States, including Target, U.S. Bancorp, Ameriprise Financial, Xcel Energy and Thrivent Financial. The city is also a thriving tech center. Its public transport, university research, proliferation of Wi-Fi, energy conservations efforts and development expenditures paired with the percentage of advanced degrees held by the work force led to Popular Science magazine naming it the “Top Tech City” in the nation. It also made #2 on the list of a Kiplinger poll of “Smart Places to Live.” This translates to success for the city’s inhabitants, as Minneapolis ranks as the 15th richest city in the country.

Entertainment

Factoring Companies in MinneapolisFor those visiting the city, they will find an incredible arts and music scene. As far as fine arts go, the Walker Art Center, which is located in downtown Minneapolis, is one of the five largest contemporary art museums in the nation. The grounds take up an astounding 15 acres and it welcomes around 700,000 visitors each year. Not including the traveling exhibits that make their way through the museum on a rotational basis, the Walker has over 13,000 pieces of modern art including drawings, costumes, books, sculptures, photography, paintings and other media works. It is also adjacent to two other buildings of note, the Cowles Conservatory and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The Walker isn’t even the largest art museum in the city though, that honor goes to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, which has over 100,000 pieces in its permanent collection. If visitors are looking for art, there is no shortage of it in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis has also been a hub for theater and performing arts since the mid-1800s. It is a little-known fact that Minneapolis ranks only behind New York in the amount of live performances per capita. There are several opera houses that have been in continuous operation for over a 100 years, such as the Grand Opera House, Pence Opera House, The Academy of Music, the Lyceum and the Metropolitan Opera House. The area is also the third largest theater market for stage productions, with giant complexes like the famous Guthrie Theater. This is a three-stage structure that opened in 1963 as an alternative to Broadway and overlooks the Mississippi with a beautiful panoramic view. The Guthrie puts on multiple shows a year from both local and traveling companies.

Minneapolis is also known as a music hub. Perhaps most famously, one of America’s most well-known artists have come from the city: Prince. Prince was born in the city (later moving to nearby Chanhassen), and actually personally shaped it as a center for pop music. By performing with local musicians he made 7th Street Entry and First Avenue popular music venues that today still attract prominent artists from around the world. The Minnesota Orchestra is also globally renowned. The critically acclaimed group has been called “the greatest orchestra in the world” and has won two Grammys for recordings of some of its music.

Sports

Factoring Companies in MinneapolisMinneapolis is also a major sports hub. It is one of the only cities with five professional sports teams: A professional football, baseball, hockey and men and women’s basketball squad. The NFL team is the oldest, the Minnesota Vikings play downtown in a brand new stadium and have a deep history with the community within the city. Being so far north, hockey is a huge part of the culture there and the Minnesota Wild is the professional hockey team. The Stars used to be located here and Minneapolis was sadly hockeyless for seven years until 2000 when the Wild moved in. They are now as much a part of the city as the former team ever was. The Minnesota Twins are the baseball franchise and they play in Target Field, which was named “The #1 Baseball Stadium Experience in North America” by ESPN, citing the amazing views, great food and comfortable seating. Finally, Minneapolis has not one but two major league basketball teams. The men’s team, the Timberwolves, arrived in 1989 after the Minneapolis Lakers departed for Los Angeles in 1960. The women’s team, the Lynx, are recent WNBA champions and have the seventh best winning percentage in the history of the league.

Lakes

Finally, Minnesota is known as the “land of a thousand lakes” and for good reason. Just outside the city of Minneapolis are several beautiful natural locales to visit. Within the city limits alone are 12 lakes, three rivers and five wetland areas alone. Most of these are ideal for fishing, canoeing, hiking or swimming in the summertime and have been immaculately cared for and maintained. In fact, the Minneapolis park system has been called the best financed, best designed and best maintained park system in the country. The Chain of Lakes, as they are known, are connected by running, bike and hiking trails as well as a scenic parkway for vehicles.

Incredible City

Minneapolis is an incredible city. It is one of America’s premier centers for fine art, performance art, live music, natural beauty as well as a major economic player. It attracts more and more tourists each year as it is becoming more widely recognized as a totally unique vacation destination with offerings not available anywhere else. It also continues to grow in population as tech and other industries attract bright young minds to come and set up residence within the city limits. Minneapolis is the American city that more people are paying attention to than ever, and for good reason.
