Elizabeth, New Jersey

Elizabeth is the county seat of Union County.  According to the 2010 US Census, the population of Elizabeth was approximately 124,969. Elizabeth retained its ranking as the 4th largest city in New Jersey by population. The Population Estimates Program, which is run by the Census Bureau, calculated the city’s population in 2015. History

Founded in 1664 by English settlers, the city of Elizabeth was originally known as Elizabethtown. Most people assume that the town was named after Queen Elizabeth I but that is not the case. Elizabethtown was named after Sir George Carteret’s wife, Elizabeth. The Carterets’ were one of the two original proprietors of the New Jersey colony. Elizabethtown served as New Jersey’s capital. The city of Elizabeth was incorporated on March 13th, 1855. It replaced both the township of Elizabeth and the Elizabeth Borough.
