Buffalo

Buffalo is the second largest city in the state of New York, behind only the New York City. It has a rich history tied closely to the Great Lakes and has been a key cog in the American economy since its inception. History

Buffalo was a planned settlement set on the shores of Lake Erie. It was designed by the same man who designed Washington D.C., Joseph Ellicott. He used the same design he used in the future capital, with the city center acting as the axel of a wheel and all of the streets radiating out like spokes. It was originally named “New Amsterdam” but the name never quite took and the city eventually became known as Buffalo in honor of the nearby Buffalo River. For the most part, the city was a relatively small trading post until the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825. This brought in a massive surge of population, trade and commerce. At the turn of the 20th century, the hydroelectric dam at the Niagara River was generating a huge amount of power, which had a huge beneficial effect on the local mills and the blossoming automotive industry. The proliferation of electrical power led to Buffalo becoming known as the “City of Light.”

Economy

Today, Buffalo’s economy still features industrial sectors and light manufacturing, but in more recent times has added both high technology and services. The largest employers in the state are the University of Buffalo, Kaleida Health, M&T Bank, Time Warner Cable, General Motors, the Unites States Federal Government and the State of New York. Buffalo’s economy has recently seen an uptick, with lots of new constructions and restoration projects creating jobs and beautifying the city. As of 2016, the area’s economy was valued at about $55 billion.

Tourism

The biggest reason tourists visit Buffalo is to see the majestic Niagara Falls. A little known fact is that Niagara Falls is made up of three separate waterfalls: Bridal Veil Falls, Horseshoe Falls and American Falls. The three combined falls hold the distinction of having the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world with a vertical drop 165 feet. The enormous power generated by the falls was first harnessed by moguls John Jacob Aster IV, J.P. Morgan and the Vanderbilts through the construction of gigantic underground turbines that generated in surplus of 100,000 horsepower and could be sent over 20 miles away. Throughout the years, there have been several people who have leapt from the top of the falls or ridden over them in an attempt to garner fame. These daredevils started with Sam Patch, a.k.a. The Yankee Leapster” in 1829 and have 14 people have attempted it since. As for tourism, over 28 million people visit Niagara Falls each year to marvel at the natural beauty and wonder of the falls. The falls are lit up every evening until midnight with multicolored lights that reflect off of the falling water. To just observe the falls is free, but for those who want to learn more they can take guided boat tour, helicopter ride or balloon ride.

Within the city, there are several things for tourists to see and do. For those who enjoy art, the first stop is the Albright-Knox Art gallery. This particular gallery specializes in modern and contemporary arts. Just because it focuses on newer pieces though, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an excellent collection of older works as well. All in all, the gallery houses paintings, sculptures and drawings from Jean Metzinger, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh. The collection on display rotates frequently, as the actual floor only has room for about 200 works, only three percent of the total collection.

For a completely different museum experience, guests should visit the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park. This wonderful attraction is located on the shores of Lake Erie and showcases all sorts of decommissioned U.S. naval vehicles including cruisers, destroyers and submarines. The best part of the park is that these incredible ships are available for tours. Visitors can actually go aboard the ships and get to see up close how they worked and how the sailors who man them lived on a day to day basis. The three aforementioned ships make up the main attractions for the park, but there are several other smaller vehicles available to see as well, such as the Rotorcycle one-man helicopter, a Walker Bulldog tank from the Korean War, a Huey, dual rotor helicopter used in Vietnam, a Work War II Bell aircraft and many more.

The museum is actually one part of the main tourist area in Buffalo known as Canalside. Canalside is a collection of stores, restaurants and event spaces that changes seasonally. There is a stage that hosts musical acts throughout the year, firework displays and several other attractions. These include beautiful public art, tour boats that run along the canal and give an in-depth look at the city’s history, carnival-style games and a couple of skating rinks that host both recreational skates as well as hockey games.

Sports

Speaking of hockey, Buffalo is very much a sports town. The local National Hockey League team is the Buffalo Sabres. The team started in 1970 and has never won the Stanley Cup, although they have competed in the Finals twice. Despite this, they have a rabid fan base and the KeyBank Center where they play their games is always a loud and rowdy place. The other professional team in the city is the legendary Buffalo Bills. Like the Sabres, the Bills have never won a championship, but hold the distinction of being the only NFL franchise to attend four Super Bowls in a row, which they lost. The Bills also have the longest post season drought of any team in professional sports, having not been to a playoff game since the 1999 AFC Wild Card game. The Bills are frequently competitive though, and have eight players in the Hall of Fame alongside two general managers and owner Ralph Wilson. One interesting note, the bills are one of only six NFL teams to have a designated marching band.

Other Entertainment

If visitors are looking for some more relaxing entertainment, then Buffalo has a few options for that as well. Shea’s Performing Arts Center is a popular stop-off for traveling Broadway productions, musicals and special events. In addition to hosting plays, the theater has built into it one of the only theater organs in operation for the theater for which it was built. This incredible organ, known as the “Mighty Wurlitzer” is one of only five in the entire world that had tonal finishing applied directly from the Wurlitzer company factory. The organ was so well made, that whenever potential customers wanted to inquire about installing an organ, Wurlitzer would bring them to the performing arts center in Buffalo to showcase what they could do.
