Durham, North Carolina

History

Present day Durham was home to the Eno and the Occoneechi tribes long before the arrival of Europeans in the mid-1700s. Scots, Irish and English colonists were some of the earliest European settlers in the region, subsisting as farmers and creating gristmills to grind their grains. This region remained a small agricultural community until the expanding railroad industry built a railroad station in 1849. The station was known as Durham Station in honor of Dr. Bartlett Durham who donated the land for it to be built. Although Durham was not a strategic city during the Civil War, armies regularly camped in the outskirts of the city and smoked the local tobacco. After the war ended and soldiers returned home, many wrote letters to Durham Station asking for more of the tobacco they had while there. This led to a significant expansion of the city’s tobacco industry, as merchants began shipping tobacco around the country, and led to the creation of the iconic Bull Durham Tobacco Factory. The rise of the tobacco industry led to the rise of textile mills in Durham, which soon doubled the city’s population. In the early 1900s, Durham became home to the historic African American community known as Hayti. In the 1950s-60s, Durham was an important city for civil rights, as the city was home to a number of prominent civil rights movements.

As home to Duke University, a top private research university, and Duke University Health System, Durham’s life sciences industry has a significant influence on the economy. In fact, Duke University and Duke University Health System are the city’s largest employers, employing more than 34,000 people.
