Statesville, North Carolina

Statesville is located in Iredell County in the state of North Carolina. Statesville is the Iredell County seat and one of the cities in the Charlotte metropolitan area. The city is specifically in Central Iredell County and lies to the west of the Piedmont area.

History

Presbyterians of Scottish-Irish ethnicity and German Lutherans left Pennsylvania where they had been living and moved to Statesville. The fertile soil in Statesville attracted them to the area, and they began practicing agriculture. There was also plenty of water and game. One of the settlements was named Fourth Creek Congregation after the freshwater stream that ran to the north of the city center. The first Presbyterian Church stands on the site where the Presbyterians build a log cabin in which they worshipped.

The year of 1755 brought with it the construction of the colony’s frontier fort, which was authorized by Arthur Dobbs, the colonial governor. The fort was built and garrisoned by the states own provincial soldiers and named Fort Dobbs. It was instrumental in defending British America’s western frontier during the French-Indian and Anglo-Cherokee war. The Fort played multiple roles:

  • Barracks for the Soldiers
  • Refuge for the Settlers
  • Fortification
  • Provisioning Depot
  • Center for Negotiations with the Native Americans.

Iredell County was born of the division of Rowan County in 1788. The new county was named after James Iredell, associate justice of the first Supreme Court during George Washington’s tenure as president. A region was needed to be the county’s seat and the following year, Fourth Creek Congregation was chosen, and its name was changed to Statesville.factoring companies in Statesville

With the coming of the railroad, the leaders of Statesville supervised the laying of tracks circa 1833 to connect the Piedmont region of North Carolina with the rest of the nation.

Statesville was doing well in agriculture, and by 1858, it had not only grown fast, but it was also leading in the production of tobacco and its products. The city was also a leader in the manufacture and blending of whiskey. It also became an important distribution center for roots and herbs.

There was a tragedy on the 27th of August 1891 when a passenger train derailed on a 300- foot long bridge.  Seven cars fell, and 30 people lost their lives.
