Lancaster is a quaint city located near the Hocking River in Fairfield County, Ohio. Despite its small size, it has a mammoth presence in this region. Fondly called “The City of Glass” by residents, Lancaster plays a major role in the economy of the region. Its proximity to larger urban centers like Columbus adds to its vibrant and diverse business environment.

Lancaster is representative of traditional American small-town living. With a population of just over 38,700 people, the neighborhoods here are small, friendly and welcoming. Those visiting Lancaster will be amazed by the atmosphere of community and kinship that shape every aspect of life. This charming city also offers magnificent vistas that are sure to take your breath away. Its landscape is dotted with rolling hills, of which Mount Pleasant is the most famous. The well-preserved Romanesque-style architecture that characterizes Lancaster’s downtown simply adds to its charm and appeal.

History

The central and southeastern parts of Ohio were first occupied by Native Americans from the Fort Ancient, Hopewell and Adena areas. Although it is believed that these tribes were the earliest inhabitants of this region, little evidence of their occupation remains today. However, you can still find ceremonial and burial mounds dotted throughout valleys in Mississippi and Ohio. Many artifacts have been discovered at these architectural sites, enabling scholars to reconstruct an accurate history of the region.

Before settlements were established by the Europeans, the region that has since grown into present-day Lancaster was inhabited by various Native American tribes such as the Iroquois, Shawnee and Wyandot. Its prominence was mainly due to the fact that it was a natural crossroads for the intra-tribal and inter-tribal wars that were fought in the region. In 1751, active exploration of the region kicked off with the arrival of renowned explorer, Christopher Gist.

After the 1783 Treaty of Paris had ended the American Revolution, Great Britain ceded control of all lands that fell to the west of the Appalachian Mountains and north of the Ohio River to the United States. This region was then annexed into the Northwest Territory in 1784. This marked the beginning of encroachment into Native American lands around the Ohio we know today. The resulting tensions led to the 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers, which was resolved when the Treaty of Greenville was signed into law in 1795.

By ensuring that new pioneer settlements were safe from raids, land speculation in Ohio started in earnest. In addition, Congress began granting land to veterans of the American Revolution. This presented a very lucrative opportunity for developers. One such prominent developer was Ebenezer Zane, who received a Congressional grant to create a new trail through Ohio in 1796. As part of this deal, he also received square-mile land parcels near the Scioto, Hocking and Muskingum rivers. In 1797, Zane began selling off plots of land that sat along the Hocking River. Thus, Lancaster was formally established in 1800.

Lancaster was initially occupied by German immigrants from Pennsylvania. It was initially called New Lancaster, but the name was later shortened in 1805 by city ordinance. The new town grew very fast because of its strategic location. The availability of water for agriculture from the interconnected Hocking and Ohio & Erie canals also played a major role in this. Lancaster was formally incorporated as a city in 1831.

Economy

Lancaster started out as a quintessential agricultural town. However, it has since evolved to the premier glass maker in the whole region. The main economic activities here today are manufacturing, retail, hospitality and construction.

This city is home to more than 150 companies that focus on the manufacturing and service industries. It enjoys a strategic location because of its proximity to major highways and other air and rail transport routes. Furthermore, the city offers businesses attractive tax incentives that make Lancaster very conducive for commerce.

The top employers in the private sector here are Ralston Foods, Anchor Hocking and Diamond Power.

Leisure and Culture

Lancaster today is characterized by an appealing mix of authentic 19th-century architecture, natural beauty and the typical modern conveniences available in any small American city. Visitors can take a tour around this city’s well-preserved historical landmarks such as Square 13.

There are also many natural points of interest here, and Mount Pleasant is the most famous one. Named “Standing Stone” by the indigenous Native American tribes, this 250-foot sandstone bluff is a magnificent sight to see. It is found in Rising Park, a renowned part of Lancaster’s system of green spaces. Visitors can hike up Mount Pleasant or the many caves that pepper its surface.

Lancaster also has a wonderful selection of museums that offer a wide range of exhibits. These include the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, Ohio Glass Museum, Sherman House and the Georgian Museum. Children can also visit the AHA Museum where they can explore their curiosity in a playful and interactive way.
