Eugene, Oregon

Located in Oregon, Eugene is the second largest city in the state after Portland. The city is flanked by Willamette Valley from the southern side, close to the confluence of two great rivers: the Willamette and the McKenzie. It is approximately 70 miles from the coast of Oregon. Eugene is not densely populated; the 2014 U.S. Census estimated the population at 160,651.

The city is home to the renowned University of Oregon and Lane Community College. Eugene is a recreational haven to those who are looking for a good time and are willing to escape from the hustle and bustle of noisy cities.

History of Eugene

Eugene was incorporated on October 17, 1862. C.H. Fox became the first marshal to patrol the newly-incorporated city the following year, and he was the first of what later became the city of Eugene Police Department.

A Sunday Law was passed in 1864 that forbade most businesses to open on Sundays, except important services like drug stores and funeral homes. The year 1889 witnessed the outlaw of the bawdy houses in Eugene.

The city hired its first black police officer in the 1960s, named Lem McKinnie. He was with the force from 1965 to 1976, and was also an ordained minister in Methodist Episcopal Church.

Economy

In addition to a thriving lumber industry, Eugene is close to Willamette Valley, which is renowned for its growing number of wineries.

Lumber is the most prominent industry in the city, despite the weakened market prices of wood that affected the industry in the early 2000s. Many manufacturing outfits produce wood products and lumber for the entire country. The Eugene region is the biggest producer of plywood and softwood products.

Farming is the second largest industry in the region to the wood industry, with crops planted year-round. As is common practice in developed nations, planting season is not dependent on rainfall alone; there are well-developed technologies to irrigate farms throughout the region.

The wine industry in Willamette Valley is a young sector that is growing fast, and is increasingly contributing to the GDP of the region. Many companies in food processing are taking advantage of the area to establish factories close to farms, the main source of their raw materials.

Legacy Coach is taking the lead in the RV manufacturing sector with luxury motor coaches. Sports and pleasure boat manufacturing are also thriving in the area, due in part to the area being ideal for boating.
