South Carolina

The French and Spanish had both previously tried to colonize the area where South Carolina would eventually be formed, but no one could make it work until the English came along in 1629. It was at that time that King Charles I granted a massive section of land to Robert Heath who built South Carolina’s first permanent settlement there. He named the colony “Carolana,” which translated from Latin means “Land of Charles.” Fast forward to the eve of the Revolutionary War, and South Carolina was the very first state to sign the Articles of Confederation, the precursor to the U.S. Constitution. After the Civil War, South Carolina converted its agriculturally based economy into a thriving textile industry while simultaneously becoming home to several military bases. Today, South Carolina has an estimated population of roughly 4.9 million, up 5.9 percent since 2010.

Those looking to visit South Carolina would do well to start with its beautiful natural scenery. Pawley’s Island is nestled in between Myrtle Beach and Charleston and is one of the East Coast’s oldest beachside resort destinations. A far cry from the more crowded and developed beaches of Florida and the West Coast, Pawley Island is ideal for those looking for the perfect place to take a barefoot walk down pristine beaches, relax in a rope hammock, or spend a day crabbing off of one of the many docks. This historic hotel opened in 1924 and is so breathtakingly beautiful that visitors should stop in and see it even if they aren’t booking a room. Around the corner is King Street, Charleston’s main hub of shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. Many people can (and do) spend multiple days hitting this happening strip without eating or drinking at the same place twice. Finally, if guests want to take in some culture in addition to the delicious food and drinks, then a visit to the Gibbes Museum of Art is a must. Established in 1858 and home of the Carolina Art Association, the Gibbes Museum is one of the oldest art organizations in the United States and houses one of the largest and most complete collections of American Art from the 18th century to present day.

Animals

South Carolina is also a great place for animal lovers to get the chance to explore and learn about both local and exotic wildlife. At Alligator Adventures, guests can see shows of alligator feedings as well as meet and greets with some of these giant reptiles. Alligator Adventures is home to two rare albino crocodiles, as well as Utan, the largest crocodile in captivity. On down the road is T.I.G.E.R.S or The Institute for Greatly Endangered Species. Here, guests can get closer than ever before to tigers, monkeys, elephants, and many more creatures. People can book special, up-close animal encounters to learn about these magnificent animals, as well as pet and play with them. Then, there is the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge, which is home to a multitude of animals, and specifically some of the most endangered animals in the world – red wolves. There are only approximately 300 red wolves anywhere, and Cape Romain houses six of them. The center’s breeding program has been successful, with multiple litters of pups being born in recent years. While the center is accessible by land, most of it is actually out on Bull Island where ferries take multiple trips every day. Finally, there are the dolphin tours in Hilton Head. Bottlenose dolphins have long called the shallow waters of Hilton Head home, and there are several companies that will take guests out to watch the magnificent creatures jump, play and hunt. There is an interesting symbiotic relationship between South Carolina’s manufacturing industries and its agricultural ones. For example, South Carolina has a huge textile and clothing industry based in the Piedmont area that relies heavily on the region’s cotton crops. The lumber and paper production industries need the 5 million hectares of trees and forest that cover the state. For many years, cotton was the dominant crop of the state, but recently tobacco and soybeans have seen a huge boom and have started to rival it as the most profitable crop. The fishing industry is also large and steadily growing, with the main catches being blue crab and shrimp. Additionally, South Carolina’s many military bases and nuclear facilities provide thousands of jobs and generate millions of dollars in revenue for the state. Today, more and more business are putting up headquarters in South Carolina, with the latest being airline giant Boeing. The company opened up an aircraft manufacturing facility just outside of Charleston that serves as one of two places for a final assembly plant for the 787 Dreamliner.
