Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota and accounts for 29 percent of the entire state’s population. It is also considered one of the top 50 fastest growing cities in America, with a 22 percent increase over the last decade. The city is one of the best places to visit in America’s heartland, thanks to its many fantastic tourist attractions, concert venues, restaurants, shopping, and most of all incredible outdoor scenery and adventure. Sioux Falls itself is rapidly growing with more businesses popping up and more tourists visiting the city to see the sights each year.

History

Sioux Falls began back in 1856 when two separate groups laid out a 320-acre claim for the land surrounding the beautiful and majestic Sioux Falls. These two groups, the Dakota Land Company of St. Paul and the Western Town Company of Dubuque, Iowa, decided to work together to ensure their best chance of survival against the harsh Midwestern winter and hostile native tribes. It was at the base of the falls that they built a small temporary settlement they dubbed “Fort Sod” in which 17 men spent the first winter in the area. The Village of Sioux Falls, as it eventually came to be known, was officially incorporated in 1876 and was granted a city charter in 1883 with a total population of just over 2,000 people. Like the rest of the U.S., the arrival of railroads contributed greatly to the prosperity of the city, with a 500 percent population increase in less than 20 years. Sioux Falls would only continue to grow throughout the years with the completion of the national highway system, the addition of an Air Force base, and the relocation of Citibank headquarters in the 1980s. Today, the population of the Sioux Falls metropolitan area is estimated to be around 250,000 people.

Economy

The economy of Sioux Falls was originally based around agriculture and quarrying. Today, the primary industries are health care, retail, and financial services. Sioux Falls is a particularly attractive home for financial companies because South Dakota doesn’t have a state corporate income tax. This saves companies a substantial amount of money each year. Some of the largest firms that call Sioux Falls home include Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Great Western Bank, Western Surety Company, Capital Card Services, Total Card Inc., First Premier Bank, and Midland National Life Insurance Company. The other major employer is healthcare. The four major hospitals in Sioux Falls account for almost 20,000 jobs. Finally, because Sioux Falls is a relatively long way from any other major retail or dining destination, Sioux Falls has become a central location for both South Dakota residents and tourists to visit, shop, and eat. There are two major parts of the city that cater to these industries, the 180-store Empire Mall and Sioux Fall’s Central Downtown area centered around Phillips Avenue and 8th and Railroad.

Events

There are several events that happen in Sioux Falls that attract visitors from all over the nation. The first and most popular is the SculptureWalk. During this event, all of downtown Sioux Falls is lined with sculptures from both local and national artists. Visitors are invited to walk around and enjoy the art but also to vote on their favorite. At the conclusion of the festival, awards are given out to the artists for Best of Show and People’s Choice. Next is the Downtown Riverfest, which celebrates the beauty of the mighty Sioux River. This festival takes place down on the city’s river walk and features everything from food and souvenir vendors to live music from touring acts and local musicians alike. The end of Riverfest is always capped off with a magnificent fireworks display over the water and is not to be missed.

Attractions

Even when Riverfest isn’t going on, Falls Park is the best place in Sioux Falls to visit. This park surrounds the falls on both sides and has miles of walking paths that take guests past the most scenic parts of the river and falls. There are also several noteworthy structures in the park worth visiting as well. The first is the Queen Bee Mill, a mill that was opened in 1878 so that local farmers could avoid the cost of shipping wheat to Wisconsin and Minnesota. The mill went through several iterations throughout the years, but today it can be toured by anyone who wishes to learn about its history within the city. The other building worth visiting is the former light and power company building. This was a building that was constructed to take advantage of the massive amount of power generated by the nearby dam. Today, however, it has been converted into the Falls Overlook Café, a wonderful little restaurant that offers diners great local cuisine as well as an incredible scenic view over the falls. Should travelers find themselves at Fall Park during the wintertime, they should definitely visit after sundown, when the river and falls get illuminated into vibrant shades of red and green to celebrate the holiday season.

Aside from all of the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside, there is plenty for guests to do in the city as well. One of the best places to start is at the Kirby Science Discovery Center. This science museum is designed to be kid-friendly but is an excellent experience for visitors of all ages. With over 100 interactive exhibits, many of which are hands-on, it is easy to get lost inside here for hours on end. Some of the exhibits on display include a 40-foot Tyrannosaurus Rex replica, a dynamic earthquake exhibit, the chance to freeze your shadow and bend light, and the opportunity to learn how weather works and try your hand at being a meteorologist.

Sioux Falls FactoringNo city would be complete without a zoo, and Sioux Falls has the Great Plains Zoo. This habitat and educational facility features over 1,000 different animals and welcomes over 270,000 guests every single year. Some of the most popular exhibits that the zoo is known for are the Asian Cat exhibit with Amur tigers, Pallas’ cats and snow leopards, rare rhinos of Africa, an albino alligator and a snow monkey habitat. The Great Plains Zoo is actually only one of 13 zoos that houses and cares for snow monkeys, also known as Japanese macaques. All in all, guests can expect to see bears, foxes, bison, wolves, penguins, Galapagos turtles and kangaroos. Visitors who have a passion for animals should look into booking one of the face-to-face animal encounters, where guests get the opportunity to sit in an enclosure with certain animals, pet them, feed them, and learn firsthand what it’s like to care for these exotic creatures.

Best Little City in America

Sioux Falls is a jewel of a city in the heart of America. It is known as The Queen City of the West, and the Best Little City in America, although if it continues growing at the pace it is that particular nickname might be in danger. It is a beautiful city with tons of things to do for both locals and tourists alike. On the outskirts of the city though is where the true soul of the city lies, in the Sioux River and its many waterfalls. There is no bad time of the year to visit this quaint and welcoming destination, and travelers owe it to themselves to make the trip and see everything that Sioux Falls has to offer.
