Allen, TX

Allen is an affluent city in Collin County and is home to about 84,000 people. It stretches over an area of 27.1 square miles, and is located about 30 miles north of Dallas.

History of Allen

Although Allen was incorporated on July, 1 1953, its history dates back to 1870 when the area served as a stop for the Houston and Texas Central Railway. Farmers in the nearby locations brought their farm produce to the stop. Before the arrival of the first groups of immigrants from Europe in the 1840s, the area was originally the homeland of the Caddo and Comanche Tribes, who moved to the West when they could no longer withstand the conflicts with the European immigrants searching for land.

Allen is almost a straight shot north of downtown Dallas.

The Houston and Texas Central Railway (H&TC) drew the plan and established the original town of Allen. It was named after Ebenezer Allen, a railroad promoter and renowned politician in the state. To meet the transportation needs of these farmers and other residents of the area, a depot that served both freight and passengers was constructed in the Allen Central Business District by H&TC in 1872. Barely six years after the construction of the depot, the first train robbery in Texas was carried out by a gang group led by Sam Bass.

However, Allen continued to serve as a stop for train lines for many years. For example, the interurban line of Texas Traction Company that linked Denison and Dallas had its stop in Allen between 1908 and 1948. During these initial decades, the city population was small. But within a period of over six decades, the population exploded, surging from 400 to 86,000 people. The development of Plano as well as Dallas, which are close to Allen, helped with the city’s growth and population increases.
