Arlington

Arlington is the 50th largest city in the United States and the 7th largest in Texas. According to the latest estimate by the U.S. Census bureau in 2015, Arlington’s city population is around 388,000 which is up approximately 23,000 from the 2010 census. Arlington is part of the larger Dallas-Ft. Worth-Arlington metro area which had an estimated population above 7 million in 2015. The healthcare sector is dominated by Arlington’s largest employer, Texas Health Resources, which is a non-profit organization that manages many area hospitals and health facilities. History

Arlington is newer than its surrounding neighbors and dates back to the early 1840s. Following a battle between Texas General Edward Tarrant and the Caddo Indians, a trading post was recognized at Marrow Bone Spring, present-day Arlington, by Colonel Tate Johnson. This became a frequent stop for stagecoaches, mail, and traveling politicians.

The early enticement of the area was the rich soil which farmers found very fertile for various crops and cotton. In 1876, Arlington was officially founded, following along the newly built Texas and Pacific Railway. The city was named after Texan General Robert E. Lee’s house located in Arlington County, Virginia. Over the next couple of decades, the city would begin to take root, quite literally, with the start of an expansive farming center that included cotton-ginning. The city’s location was ideal for farmers to grow crops with nearby water sources plentiful and the aforementioned rich soil. By 1910, Arlington saw the addition of electricity, running water, natural gas, and telephone service. The first public school system was announced in the same year. Prior to World War II, the population was estimated to be over 4,000.

The most notable time period of Arlington’s history is the 1950’s. The population went from 8,000 to 45,000 with a massive industrialization phase which included the establishment of the General Motors Assembly Plant and the growing aerospace industry. Mayor Tom Vandergriff, who served as mayor for 25 years, was instrumental in kick starting the recreation and entertainment venues Arlington is famous for. After Disneyland was built in California, Vandergriff wanted to create the same opportunity for his city and in 1961, Six Flags Over Texas was opened. The Wet ‘n Wild water park, now Hurricane Harbor, soon followed along with the Rangers Ballpark and most recently, AT&T Stadium. The entertainment district of present-day Arlington has grown significantly over the years in attractions, restaurants, and crowds, bringing in over 6.5 million visitors per year.

Education

Arlington and the 40-mile radius surrounding the city is home to more than 40 colleges, universities, and higher education institutions. The most prominent include the University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington Baptist College, Tarrant County College – Southeast, and the B.H. Carroll Theological Institute.

Culture and Recreational Activities

Arts and Museums
Arlington has been known as the world headquarters for bowling ever since the U.S. Bowling Congress relocated to the area. The International Bowling Museum and the International Bowling Hall of Fame are located on the International Bowling Campus in Arlington. Theatre Arlington, one of the largest community theatres in the nation, The Arlington Museum of Art, the Planetarium Dome Theater at UT Arlington and The Gallery at UT Arlington make up the top art venues in the city. The Levitt Pavilion Arlington offers over 50 free concerts per year and is located in downtown Arlington.

Shopping
The Parks Mall at Arlington features many retail outlets, restaurants, an ice skating rink, and a movie theater. The Arlington Highlands and The Lincoln Square are two other popular retail sites offering outlet-style shopping. Finally, the Arlington Highlands, known as an “entertainment hotspot”, is filled with entertainment oriented restaurants like Studio Movie Grill, The Improv Theatre, and Dave and Busters.

Sports
As previously mentioned, Arlington is home to a professional baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and a professional football team, the Dallas Cowboys. The newest addition to the professional team lineup is the Dallas Wings, which became the first Women’s National Basketball Association franchise in North Texas. College teams in the area include the UT Arlington Mavericks and the Arlington Baptist College Patriots.
