Frankston

Frankston is a town located in Anderson County in the state of Texas. It has a population of 1,229 residents according to the 2010 census. The town has a total area of 2.5 square miles. Frankston is described as a rising star in East Texas.

History

A TN&N Railroad crew was on the lookout for new lines. They loved the scenic view of the stretch between Kickapoo and Fincastle. They loved the region so much that they planned the town that would later be known as Frankston. The town was positioned in close proximity to both Dallas and Houston. It was also only a 25-mile radius away from the prosperous Palestine, Jacksonville, Tyler, and Athens. These towns were doing pretty well and being close to them held certain advantages for the new town of Frankston.

A large number of the town’s residents moved from Kickapoo, which was an old battleground for the Indians. In a short time, the town had businesses up and running when some enterprising merchants build business shacks. These merchants included:

The first industry to come up in the region was lumber and some of the lumber businesses that were started then were still up and running well into the 1980s. Around 1925, cotton was the main contributor to the bulk of the economy. The main crops that were grown in  Frankston and in neighboring Jacksonville were peaches and tomatoes.

At the height of its economic success, Frankston had three hotels, some gas stations, a railroad station, retail outlets, cafes, a basket factory, and a livery stable. The residents were also treated to some performances at the town’s theater. The railroad station was the hub of the town.

There is a bit of controversy surrounding the naming of Frankston. Two theories are floated. One theory, and the most accepted one, alleges that the town was named after Frankie Miller, a young woman who gave up some land for the city park that is downtown. The story goes that a business house was built is 1901 and it contained a post office. The leaders of the town named this building Ayres after the only doctor who lived and served the residents at that time. The doctor was called Dr. Ayres. However, Frankie had become quite popular due to her selfless act of donating land. To honor her, they named the post office and the railway station Frankston.

The other theory asserts that Frankston was named after a man who was known as Frank Miller.  The state bought the land from him and named the town in his honor. His house still stands to this day and is a historical landmark. The original main street is still known as Miller Street.

Government

Frankston has a well-established government system with a city hall building that houses the police department as well as the Anderson County sheriff’s department. The town also has a fire department that is run by volunteers.

The sub-courthouse is operated by the county and is located on the southwest corner of the town’s downtown square. There is a post office that is run by the US Postal Service which is also located downtown.

Attractions

Frankston has a few places that would hold the interest of visitors as well as residents.

• The Library Museum: This one is established inside a restored railroad depot downtown.
• The Kathleen Cook Fitzgerald Museum: This is named after Mrs. Fitzgerald, a schoolteacher whose desire was to see a library and a museum in the town. The museum’s main focus is Frankston and neighboring region’s historical artifacts.
• Farmers’ Market: The harvest season sees the town hosting a farmers’ market to market locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Climate

Frankston, like the rest of Texas, is known for its near-perfect climate, except for the summers which are described as hot and humid. The winters, however, are not too chilly. They are usually mild to cool. The Köppen climate classification system classifies the Frankston climate as a humid subtropical climate.

Some of the notable people that call Frankston home include Frank Beard, a drummer for a band known as ZZ Top, and Herbert H. Reynolds, the 11th president of Baylor University.

Frankston is the epitome of small-town life where the residents are close-knit and community living is encouraged. It is in close proximity of major cities, therefore, residents can visit the neighboring towns for more interesting sceneries and activities which may be missing from Frankston.
