Humble, Texas

Humble is a city located in the Houston metropolitan area in Harris County, Texas. The city has a total area of approximately 10 square miles, with shallow petroleum production encircling the city by about a 2.5-mile radius. Since the early 20th century, Humble has been known for its oil production, which has been a primary driver in Humble’s economy. Humble, Texas was home to Humble Oil and Refining Company, which is now Exxon Co. USA.

The city is home to more than 15,000 individuals, and its population is notably growing due to the dynamic commercial activities in the city. It is considered to be the center for socio-economic activities in Northeast Harris County. Aside from the oil industry, Humble is also known for its lumber industry and is one of the major sources of timber in the county.

The city has a humid subtropical climate with a hot summer and mild winter, which is why it boasts luscious parks and nature reserves, as well as beautiful botanical gardens.

History

The first inhabitants were thought to have settled in the early 1800s. The first known settler was Joseph Dunman, who was believed to have moved to the area in 1828. Just before the civil war, Pleasant Smith “Plez” Humble arrived in the area and acquired land along the San Jacinto River where he began a ferry operation that paved the way for Humble to be the center for commercial activities.

Mr. Humble was responsible for opening the first post office in his home and soon, the Humble name was chosen for the area. In 1883, Mr. Humble was reportedly a fruit stand operator, then a wood dealer by 1885. He also served as a justice of the peace in 1886. By 1900, his occupation was said to be an attorney-at-law.

Before oil was discovered, the vast timber woods available in the area opened the doors for Humble to be an economic center. C.O. Bender made it possible for the city to be a crossroads for lumber transportation by building a huge sawmill in the area. Bender bought the town site and established a commissary where the workers traded tokens in exchange for merchandise.

The oil industry only started booming in the early 20th century. In 1902, shallow oil production began, and it was in 1904 when the big oil gusher occurred in Humble. People started to flock the city due to the overwhelming discoveries of oil. There was a steady rise in oil discoveries in the city, and by 1905, the Humble oilfield was deemed to be the largest in Texas. This gave birth to the Humble Oil and Refining Company in 1911, which is presently known as Exxon Co. USA. When oil production started to decline, landowners went back to dairy farming, truck farming and lumbering in the timber industry.

Humble stayed a small and peaceful city until 1969 when the Houston Intercontinental Airport opened. Residential areas started to develop around the city, which caused to the economic activity in Humble to rise in order to meet the demands of the growing number of consumers. The city is now home to high-end businesses and retail facilities, making Humble a commercial, social and economic center in Northeast Harris County.

Nature Centers

Humble boasts beautiful botanical gardens and rich forest reserves with its subtropical climate. One of the most visited spots in the city is the Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens. The garden haven started as a couple’s personal garden and grew to become a 325-acre public area. You may explore the area on your own, or you can take a guided tour. Mercer Arboretum is ideal for tourists of any age since it offers playgrounds, trails, pavilions and a butterfly garden.

Another outdoor tourist destination is the Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Reserve. Being a large nature reserve, it is a natural habitat for various plants and animals. They have also recreated a homestead from the 1800s in their Redbud Hill Homestead, as well as a camp in their Akokisa-Ishak Indian Village.
