Longview, Texas

Most of Longview is located in Gregg County, in East Texas, and a little portion of it extends into Harrison County. Longview is the 45th largest city in the state of Texas and is the seat of Gregg County. With a population close to 82,000, it is the principal city of the Longview metropolitan statistical area. This area is made up of three counties namely Gregg, Upshur, and Rusk.

History

The city of Longview was founded by Ossamus Hitch Methvin, Sr. in the 1870s.  He sold 100 acres of land to the Southern Pacific Railroad for $1 to coax them into building their line in the direction of land he owned. Longview thus became a railroad route into East Texas. Before the year was over, Methvin sold yet another 100 acres of his land, this time for $500 in gold with the hope that the railroad would increase the value of the rest of his land.

Methvin is also credited with giving the town its name when he exclaimed, “What a long view!” from his home. Longview was incorporated as the first town in Gregg County in June 1871.

Mobberly Hotel opened its doors in 1884 targeting the railroad travelers and soon became the center for social gatherings in the town. It was located near the train depot in the junction part of Longview. Unfortunately, the hotel was brought down by a fire on June 13, 1965.

Construction on the Big Inch pipeline in Longview began In 1942. Over 261,000,000 barrels of crude oil were transported to the East Coast from 1943 to 1945. Big Inch and Little Inch (you read that right), a smaller pipeline constituted the longest pipeline ever build on earth. They both contributed significantly to the United States war effort in World War II.

After the second world war, Longview experienced a population growth spurt going from 24,502 to 40,050 in 1960. The growth was as a result of migration from Rural Gregg County and the add-ons of Spring Hill and Greggton.

Climatic Conditions

• The winters of Longview are tolerable as they are mild. Average snowfall is reported to be less than 2 inches, and there the residents experience only one of two ice storms every winter. The highs range from the 50s to the 60s while the lows are anywhere between 30s and 40s. The temperature seldom goes below 20 degrees Fahrenheit and can climb up to 80 degrees during the winter months.
• Springs comes with storms and the temperature go up to the 60s to 80s and 40s to 60s for the highs and lows respectively. The last frost is usually during the early days of April. Intense thunderstorms are prevalent during this period, and cold frosts pass through often. Longview experiences its wettest time of the year in spring.
• The summers are hot and humid with temperatures rising from the 90s to over 100s and the lows in the 70s. Occasionally, the heat index goes all the way to 110 degrees. The summer days are long and hot. Visitors who are not used to this much heat could find it a tad uncomfortable.
• The fall is accompanied by the first cold front which at least brings the high temperatures down from the 100s to the 90s. Vegetation begins to show changes in late October when the temperature and dew points go down.
