Richmond, Virginia

Located on the Fall Line of the James River, Richmond is the capitol of Virginia and one of the oldest cities in the United States. With a population of approximately 220,000, Richmond is the fourth largest city in the state.

History

In 1607, Christopher Newport and John Smith led the first English explorers to the area of present day Richmond. However, the English explorers did not set up a permanent settlement, as the Powhatan tribe, known best for the story of Pocahontas, already inhabited the area. William Byrd, one of the first permanent settlers, founded Richmond in 1737 and named it after a city in England. Richmond served an important role prior to and during the American Revolution. In 1775, it was the meeting site of the Second Virginia Convention, during which Patrick Henry gave his historical “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech. In 1780, Richmond replaced Williamsburg as the state capitol of Virginia and, shortly after, was destroyed by the British under Benedict Arnold. In 1786, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, written by Thomas Jefferson, was passed in Richmond and is recognized annually to this day. During the American Civil War, Richmond became the capitol of the Confederate States of America, making it a significant target for the Union Army. With its location along the James River, Richmond has always been a hub for commerce, and when the city’s transportation options expanded following the Civil War, its importance in commerce strengthened. Over time, the city’s infrastructure evolved to support easy transportation. Today, Richmond sits at the intersection of two major freeways, the Great Turning Basin for boats and the world’s only triple crossing of rail lines.

Economy

Although it doesn’t show live performances, another important theater in Richmond is the Byrd Theatre, which is both a State and National Historic Landmark. Built in 1928 as one of the Nation’s Grand Movie Palaces, the Byrd Theatre still shows movies today.
