Cox Communications is considered the third-largest cable provider in the United States. Cox Communications provides services in internet, telephone, television, home security and networking solutions, serving more than 6.3 million customers across the United States.
Cox Enterprises began its expansion into the cable television industry in 1962 by acquiring three small cable systems in Lock Haven, Lewistown and Tyrone, all located in Pennsylvania. It later acquired systems in Oregon, California and Washington.
The company’s development lead to the creation of its subsidiary, the Cable Broadcasting Corporation, which was formed in 1964 after it was listed on the New York Stock Exchange as a public company. CBC was renamed Cox Communications in 1982. To consolidate Cox’s cable-television interest, Cox Cable Communications was incorporated.
In 1985, Cox Communications became a privately owned subsidiary of Cox Enterprises after the former’s public shares were merged with Cox Enterprises. Cox began its testing of a cable-based personal communications services (PCS) in 1991, and in 1992, they reached a major milestone by being the first company to make the first PCS call-over-cable lines.
In 1993, Cox was the first multiple-cable operator to offer telecommunications services to business customers in Hampton Roads, Virginia. To better provide service to its clientele, Cox built its own IP network and launched Cox High-Speed Internet in 2002. In 2013 the company launched its Contour television product.
Cox Communications is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cox Enterprises.
