Transportation Logistics Company

invoice factoring on J.B. Hunt invoicesJ.B. Hunt Transportation Services Inc. is one of the largest transportation logistics companies in North America, serving customers throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Johnnie Bryan Hunt founded the company in Arkansas in 1961, as a side business to his poultry feed company. What began with five trucks and seven trailers, has since become the largest publicly held trucking company in North America. Hunt was a strategic businessman, despite only having a seventh-grade education, and his ability to foresee the deregulation of the trucking industry in the 1980s gave him an advantage. During this time, he was able to cut costs by hiring non-union workers and owning his own trucks and equipment, instead of the industry standard of leasing equipment from private companies. Keeping labor costs to a minimum allowed his drivers to carry more freight than his competition and made it possible for him to secure a very profitable contract with Wal-Mart.

The company went public in 1983, with $63 million in revenue. In the 1990s, Hunt expanded to Mexico through a contract with the Santa Fe Railroad, an innovative move at the time. Today, J.B. Hunt operates through four distinct, but complementary, business segments: Intermodal, Dedicated Contract Services, Integrated Capacity Solutions, and Truckload.

Intermodal

J.B Hunt’s Intermodal segment is a leader in the industry. This segment provides its customers with intermodal freight solutions through its extensive relationship with various rail companies. The Intermodal segment is the company’s largest source of revenue; on average it accounts for more than 50 percent of the total revenue each quarter. It also has the largest drayage fleet in North America, as well as the largest 100-percent 53’ high-cube container fleet. Additionally, it has priority loading and unloading at major rail terminals, ensuring that its customers’ freight arrives on time. In 2016, the Intermodal segment saw a seven percent volume increase over the same period in the previous year, however, because of increased operating costs, this only resulted in a two percent increase in revenue.

Dedicated Contract Services

The company’s Dedicated Contract Services segment is its second largest source of revenue. This segment is focused on the design, development, and execution of value-driven supply-chain solutions in order to provide a customized solution for its customers’ shipping needs. The company’s long history and experience in the industry give it access to resources and knowledge that are unmatched in the industry. The company’s wide variety of transportation methods and extensive transportation network give it the ability to put together the best combination of assets and people to get the job done and make a difference in the customer’s bottom-line. In 2016, the Dedicated Contract Services segment saw a six percent increase in revenue over the same period in the previous year. In addition, this segment saw an increase in operating income of 16 percent.

Integrated Capacity Solutions

J.B. Hunt’s Integrated Capacity Solutions segment provides alternative, non-asset based transportation solutions through its relationships with more than 20,000 carriers throughout North America. It also provides asset-light, traditional freight brokerage, and transportation logistics solutions using both its own transportation equipment and its relationships with third-party carriers. This segment operates more than 30 remote sales branches and provides on-site logistics personnel as well as a range of transportation options, including expedited, flatbed, refrigerated, and less-than-truckload (LTL). The Integrated Capacity Solution segment services all fifty states, Canada, and Mexico.

Truckload

The company’s Truckload segment is one of the largest capacity networks in North America. Through this segment, the company provides its customers with full-van, dry-load freight over roads, and highways. The company uses its own equipment and employee drivers, or independent contractors who agree to use company trailers. This segment also provides instant GPS tracking of shipments via the Internet. Although this segment accounts for the smallest percentage of revenue, it is expanding. In fact, over the past year, J.B. Hunt has increased its tractor operation by almost 200 tractors.

Development & Innovation

J.B. Hunt stands out from its competitors, because of the company’s dedication to intermodal development, expansion to foreign markets, technological innovation, and its commitment to customer service. The company goes above and beyond to find a solution for its customers’ needs, often creating a customized plan to match their needs with the company’s services. Additionally, the company has always focused on growth through innovation, which has helped it to cut costs and increase revenue. Whether through alliances with rail companies or developing new technology that gives it an advantage in the industry, J.B. Hunt has always been ahead of the game.
