Since its establishment in 1907, it has become the largest package delivery company in the world. The company has also diversified its service offerings by moving into providing solutions for supply chain management. History

In 1907, James Casey and Claude Ryan founded a new company called the American Messenger Company. It was based in Seattle, Washington. The company’s main focus was on delivering packages to retail stores, as well as delivering mail for the United States Postal Service, which was their biggest client at the time. During those early years, they made most of their deliveries on foot, or by bicycle for longer trips.

The American Messenger Company acquired its first delivery vehicle in 1913. That year, Casey and Ryan also merged with Evert McCabe – one of their largest competitors – to form Merchants Parcel Delivery. This move allowed them to introduce consolidated delivery, which entailed delivering all the packages sent to a neighborhood using one delivery truck.

Charlie Soderstrom joined the company in 1916. He brought with him more delivery trucks for the growing business. This allowed Merchants Parcel Delivery to expand outside Seattle for the first time in 1919. The company began offering its services in Oakland, California and changed its name again to United Parcel Service.

In 1922, UPS acquired an LA-based company, allowing it to expand its services to include common carrier services. By this time, the company had grown to become one of the only companies that offered common carrier services in the United States. Initially limited to a small part of Los Angeles, fast expansion allowed it to offer common carrier outside the city by 1927.

By 1930, the company had begun operating in New York and other cities in the East and Midwest. However, using common carrier to fulfill all its deliveries placed UPS in competition with large players like the Interstate Commerce Commission and the United States Postal Service. This limited the cities in which UPS could operate without state commission and ICC authority. However, the company was able to expand its operations to Chicago by 1953.

UPS began offering air freight services in 1929. The program was soon stopped because the Great Depression caused a significant drop in cargo volumes, but was reinstated in 1953 as the UPS Blue Label Air service. By 1975, UPS had moved its headquarters to Connecticut and began serving all states. This made it the first package delivery company to serve every address in the country. 1975 also marked the year when UPS went global.
